They are the team I am most "worried" about signing him. However, if they give him a max or close to it, more power to him.

Throwing a 2 or 3 + 1 max at Holiday isn't that different then going after Parsons a few years ago. On the plus side they have to seriously remodel their roster to make it happen, so doing it via a S&T makes sense for them. At the worst we get a big trade exception, at best we turn Asik into Matthews and get a decent sized trade exception.

But this is probably all agent manipulation.

Oh look, a packaged Holiday deal. Thinking this is another warning shot across New Orleans Pelicans bow. Sign both brothers or else!

Sure let's sign both. I assume you're willing to sign a discounted deal to make it work, right Jrue?

Oh no anything but that!

How will we go on without paying Jrue Holiday 100million + and also signing his mediocre brother????

i guess. they won 33 games. a serious remodel seems like a good idea.

if they get Dirk to take a healthy pay cut (maybe with a wink wink post retirement deal), they could probably keep everyone. if signing Holiday means dumping Matthews and/or Powell, is that really a problem for them? why isn't Holiday alone an upgrade at that price?

if you can head into the post Dirk era with Holiday, Barnes, Noel + #9 with whatever sorcery Carlisle can conjure, that's not a bad place to be

It all depends on how much of a paycut Dirk will take. I agree with you that Dirk will be taken care of one way or another so he'd play for the minimum if it got them some real help. But we're talking about $30 million for Jrue + an overpay for Justin. We discussed this several weeks ago and IIRC the Mavs could get to $38 million in cap space by doing the Asik/Matthews trade and stretch and Dirk playing for $5 million. But does turning Matthews into the Holiday brothers even guarantee the Mavs make the playoffs? Dirk would be giving up $20 million in the here and now for what would be a 6-8 seed at best on paper. Carlisle would really have to work some magic to make it anything more.

I get operating over the cap is theoretically the best scenario if all things played out realistically, but it's not feeling like that is going to happen. Get some effing wings that can score and move off the ball and a floor general of some sort and let's see where the big 2 take us. Unless of course a max player looks at GSW, looks over at AD/Cousins, and says "these are the two guys I need to beat this team".

One potential upside to Holiday not returning, we will be rid of all three guards (Gordon/Holiday/Evans) that got to take the last second shots 90% of the time (that's a made up number before people go crazy).

i would think Dirk is smart enough to know there are no moves the Mavs can make to be a top 4 seed. so either he takes the final payday and is fine being comfortably out of the playoffs or he takes a cut to try to get them back into the playoffs.

as a Pels fan, i think the Mavs would be better off getting Holiday, even if the Pels deal for Matthews and/or (god forbid) Powell. one more team vying for a playoff spot is not something i'd be excited about

Short of adding a 3rd star, signing Cousins is the only thing that matters over the next 13 months. Keeping the same team that we ended the season with would be a hard sell to everyone including the players, so I don't think the main move they make can be stretching Asik and dumping Ajinca to resign Boogie. But if Holiday walks and forces you under the cap, I think you need to take $12 million of your cap space and use it on Cousins if you can't get a max level player like Lowry or CP3.

i agree. it needs to be all about Davis/Cousins. forget the Big 3 shite. Holiday isn't good enough for that.

work to build something greater than the sum of the parts around the two foundational pieces you have

Would the pacers be interested in a holiday for PG swap? Would the pels be interested in a possible one year rental of PG to pair with AD and Cousins? Maybe he'd stay if they did real well? Is Teague leaving? I have questions. Idk

Why swap Holiday with PG when we can swap Holiday for LeBron?

Let's do that then. I mean if Memphis would swap Gasol for Kwame Brown and Sacramento would swap Cousins for Buddy Hield, why not.
