I bet there will be some serious gamesmanship with it though.

The trade deadline before that offseason will see deep teams like us selling off guys at the deadline they can’t protect to less deep teams to try and get some compensation.

Yep

I don't think it would be that bad for us if it were hypothetically with our current roster. I think we'd keep basically everyone we wanted to, also there's usually a limit on the number of players that can be drafted from your team. So something like, at the most we'd lose 2 guys, something along those lines.

I wonder how that works with the cap. Say, if Graham and Temple were taken, we'd drop around $17mil in salary, but as an over the cap team, can we only replace them with minimums/exceptions or would there be an expansion type exception that would allow us to replace their full $17 mil if we wanted to?

It’s too soon for this to happen now. What’s important now is getting the expansion fees before the CBA negotiations. I wouldn’t expect new teams and an expansion draft until next offseason at the earliest. It would be a good reason to keep Kira and Jaxson around rather than move them for a limited return.

yes i believe the max is 2 can be lost
its not that big of a deal

say for example the draft was this offseason, JV and graham would more than likely get drafted (or hayes if JV is protected). who cares? pels get off the money and can replace them with drafted plyers

I assume the earliest an expansion draft would happen is the summer of 2024, or the league will wait to do it for the start of a new national TV contract (2025-26 season).

If we get players taken, do we get compensated with extra draft picks?

Teams are capable of cutting deals with the expansion teams.

We could throw a pick or two in with Graham to keep everyone else protected.

no, unless as teke pointed out above teams can negotiate (ie: send a 2nd to NOT take a guy, or to PLEASE take a guy )

The league will do anything to help the Lakers dump Westbrook's contract. :jest:

They really need to work on super team issues before adding another small market team (Seattle).

I did an expansion team on 2k and ended up getting both Lavine and Thompson in the expansion draft. Both teams wanted to dump big contracts. There is a good chance a lot of teams would leave some vets unprotected, especially big money ones to get them off the books or just cause they know an expansion team wouldn't take them.

If it's next summer, someone like McCollum. 36M expiring. Not really a marquee name that is going to sell tickets. Maybe the expansion team can take him and trade him later in the season... IDK. I just think those will be a lot of the players left unprotected..

You’re going to find John Walls and Russel Westbrooks unprotected.

Not CJ McCollum or Zach Levine

There will 100% be big contracts left unprotected.

Lavine/CJ/Klay will not be on that list.

Expansion rules are that they have to have a payroll of a certain threshold and have to take a certain number of players.

Taking players for draft compensation or taking players to be flipped elsewhere is a normal thing.

Protections vary from draft to draft but the last two team expansion (1995) saw 8 protected players per team.

2004 expansion -

The Bobcats got to move up to 2nd overall in the draft in exchange for 4th overall, a 2nd, and taking Pedrag Drovnjak from the Clip Show.

They selected Jadhi White from the Suns in exchange for a future first and cash

They selected Alex Pavlovich from the Jazz and shipped him to Cleveland for a lottery protected first (later durned into Jared Dudley in the 2007 draft)

They took Zara Pachulia from the Magic and shipped him to the Bucks for a 2004 2nd (45th overall).

Potentially, we could send out a pick to force a certain player out as well as trading other picks for someone unprotected by another team.

As a theoretical, if the Thunder left a young guy we wanted unprotected, we could flip a pick to whatever team drafted the guy we wanted.

OKC is a theoretical because they have a ton of young talent but also unlikely to be hit hard simply because they have so many picks they can bribe their way out of losing someone good. Like we can do.

So we get bumped to the East when the East is finally not insanely less talented than the West. Cool

It’s much more likely they move Minnesota and Memphis

You think the Warriors would protect Thompson next summer?

He is going to make 43M the next season. They could save probably 100M if someone else took him off their hands.

I'm wondering which other max or big money guys would be left unprotected. I would have said Gobert. But he just got traded for a huge deal. So I would have been wrong there.

I'm thinking Tobias Harris. Maybe Porzingis? How about Michael Porter JR or Ben Simmons? I love Randle. But he is for sure being left unprotected..

Depends when the teams start operations.

If they start in 2023, shite contracts around that year include-

Beal (if he forces an out plus having no-trade clause)
Tobias Harris
Ben Simmons, possibly
Kristaps Porzingis
DeAaron Fox
CP3
Kyle Lowry
Julius Randle
Mike Conley

The lowest of those is $24.4m a season.

Seattle will have a pretty good squad after the expansion draft and the Durant trade.

CP3/ Lonzo
Graham / Cam Reddish
KD / Gordon Hayward
Draymond / Lebron
Christian Wood / Hassan Whiteside

This is the same group that paid something like $70 for Kelly Oubre once you factor in the luxury tax. They aren't going to let a team legend go to an expansion team, not happening.

Tobias and Randle are the types that would be unprotected. Porzingas too if he can't get healthy soon. Less so on MPJ and Simmons, but yea, if they don't get on the court, they could be candidates too.

LeBron

I see what you did there.

He’d go about “wanting to start a new legacy on this new team” and would then try transitioning into FO if this actually happened.

Also since we are talking about the Seattle team, did y’all see Jaylen Brown’s comment that they should let the players have ownership of it… would make for some interesting talks
