He hasn't coach for nearly a decade. He never made it past the first round with Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady.
Is all of the hype around him based off of his one NBA Finals appearance with the Knicks 16 years ago?
That was the initial reaction of many to JVG, "he's stuck in the past." But he's kept a pretty high profile both with the announcing gig and being a regular on sports talk shows, so you can really get a feel for his ideas on the game. When you look at what he says about the game, and you see his shift towards analytics and today's game ahead of the curve in Houston, concerns about being stuck in the 90's dissipated for most. I personally feel he'll be like Thibs but be more open to, or rather care about, having a modern offense.
If you don't like him after doing a little research on how he's stayed in touch with the game fine, but I don't think you can dismiss him because he's an old retread. He doesn't really fit that stereotype.

I feel like both JVG and Thibs will do wonders for our defense, which is what is really needed.
I feel JVG will be more open minded on how to make our offense better than it already was, which is why i lean his way.

It's not so much that I think he is stuck in the past or that he is an old retard.. My Initial reaction is will AD like him. How will he fit in,will he be a friend, will he be a coach, will he be both. Will this team want to play for him? Does he still have it? I think he is a awesome coach and I don't think we would be wrong in hiring him. Just will we be right..
I think JVG is someone that would be more willing and open to work with everyone in the organization and not feel to big headed which is a good thing. Thibs not so much.
