I'm with you Slow. Those things concern me as well.

However there is reason to believe he could adapt. He's been heavily into analytics since leaving coaching, which most "dinosaurs" don't embrace at all. He's been around the game actively and has commented many many times about how the game has evolved. He recognizes it.

And his brother was definitely running a perimeter offense with Orlando.

We would have to see what offensive assistant he brings in.

While he may have been out of the game, he's been on the sidelines covering and analyzing it for years now. He sees what works in today's NBA. It's not like he's been in the mountains off the grid or something. Would love to get JVG.

The Bird Writes has a few good articles up on JVG. One specifically addresses pace and his adoption of the 3 point shot.

quote:

The 0.290 3PAr the Rockets put up in Van Gundy's final season would rank 11th (and much higher than the Pelicans 0.233) during the past season. This is important as all four participants in the conference finals rank within the top seven (Houston 1st, Cleveland 2nd, Atlanta 4th, Golden State 7th) in 3PAr for the year.

That brings me to pace. Notice that, relative to the league, Van Gundy's teams slowly but surely got faster. Those first two seasons with the Knicks there were only 29 teams in the league (pre-Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets). In 2006-07 the Rockets under Van Gundy played faster (90.7-89.8) and took far more 3-pointers (0.290-0.247) than the Gregg Popovich coached San Antonio Spurs. Do I expect JVG to coach one of the fastest teams in the NBA? No. Would he come close to, or possibly exceed, league average pace? Considering the direction his coaching has gone and the roster in New Orleans, I think it is a strong possibility.

JVG's acceptance and implementation of analytics on offense and defense is clear. Not only did that team lead the league in 3PAr, they were fifth in fewest long mid-range jump shots. Not only that, but as has usually been the case with great defensive teams, they force opponents to take the most of these inefficient shots while allowing the fewest attempts in the restricted area. The drum I have pounded all season, quit allowing shots at the basket, is a strength.

LINK

There's more at the link, well worth the click. Dell won't confuse his resume with Gentry's, but there's probably more hope for balancing offense and defense with JVG than Thibs.

Because having a coach that most consider a good guy worked out so well for us.

i could care less if he's a good guy or not

he's just really annoying during games. and if there is any correlation between saying stupid shite while commenting on games and being a stupid person, then we should watch out for JVG.

just dan's .02

Holy crap I couldn't disagree more about that. I love him as a commentator. He's hilarious. I find his ideas to be always fun and interesting.

As for that BW article...good stuff. Food for thought.

I honestly used to like him a lot a few years ago

the quality has declined rapidly. I have to keep him and lolMarkJackson on mute half the time now.

I'm starting to like the idea of JVG, even more so than Gentry (unless he brings Adams).

Gentry with Adams
Thibs or JVG
Gentry without Adams

I just watched a recent interview with him about building offense. It's on YouTube.

He basically said you have to build it around your personnel and he's felxible as to what is run. He said all that matters is getting quality shots. His favorite sequence is multiple passes with good movement that ends in a layup. He cited a recent Spurs play as an example.

I would be fine with JVG.
kind of would rather him over thibodaux. I will be upset at first with gentry, but I'll give him a shot to prove me wrong, just won't be happy giving him the chance.

I'd much rather keep Monty than get Van Gundy. He's by far the worst option.

I really don't get this. The team's main issue with Monty at the helm was horrible defense. JVG would be an instant upgrade in defense. The offense will be fine, as long as it flows through AD (and Jrue if healthy) and our 3 point shooters.
