The team doesn't own the term Pelicans. They can't. They can own "New Orleans Pelicans"

What Ozzy is saying, is that the team won't give them credentials if they brand themselves as being "Pelicans" or something. I can maybe get that. But the name they chose is really bad. Like really really bad. I can understand that they are an ESPN affiliate and not a fan site. But still have something to do with basketball in the title.

NOLA HOOPS 247
Crescent City Hopps 247

I don't understand why they picked the street known as a tourist trap.

If i just saw the name of the site, I would think it had to do with Bars downtown.

Sadly it sounds like they put a good bit of money into this horrible name.

also when you google the name, the first eight responses are about shootings on Bourbon Street. So they have that old Washington Bullets thing going for them.

I can get it is your baby 42, but you guys picked a bad name.

I'm not here to pile on, honestly, and I understand your explanation. But, to me, there are three problems: 1) personally, I'm not sure I'd like the name regardless of the context, type of site or its content; 2) the name has no clear relationship to basketball (yeah, I know . . ."shots" . . .but no) and 3) exacerbating problem 2 is that BBS actually misleads potential readers to think of specific things other than basketball as being on the site, e.g., a review of bars, comments from Bourbon Street, etc.

Of course, good content is much more important, and perhaps we'll all get used to it.

Those problems are real, but they are not without qualification.

First, there is no accounting for taste, really, and as you said, time will likely make any name, good or bad, a nonissue if the content is there.

Second, if the name actually was the thing that attracted people to sites, that would be a bigger issue. Search engines are more tied to content, and bookmarks are just buttons. Tweets etc. get to people from others they follow and perhaps trust, and that is likely a bigger factor than the name itself.

Third, a number of basketball sites do not bear a direct basketball relationship in the name more than "shots," such as perchedinthelane.com, which is not ambiguously about basketball or pelicans or new orleans or the nba either.

It's not an easy problem, and I appreciate someone producing an actual available name. It's not easy.

As far as pelicansreport goes, not everyone needs to follow the same advice since those sites are different. In fact, it's more like Hornets Talk than just about anything else. There is a ton of difference in how those sites operate in the world.

Just to repeat since the thread is getting long: I'm not advocating for the name. I'm just discussing the genesis. No big deal. I don't expect everyone to like it. It is doing very well with readers, which was goal number one.

I'm pretty sure Pelicans247 would not receive warm welcome in general if the previous name were not Horents247.

Not too much money. Like 2 figures.

Of course when you use google on the name of the site you don't get the site . . . it's new.

if you knew the name, you'd just go to it.

if you google new orleans pelicans blog, in time, it will show up strongly. for now, hornets247 shows up and pushes one to the new site.

As far as something known to be a tourist trap . . . so it's known.

About it being my baby: I said it in the other post just now, but people liking the name is really not important to me. I'm just discussing, telling the why's, adding in other considerations.

You will never see me tell you what you need to like.

If someone dismisses some good points made on a site because they don't like the name, that's their right.

Damn. I wish I would have seen it. I can understand being cordial, though.

As much as 42 says he doesn't care what people think, he clearly does.

Not really.

I don't care if people who have already chosen to not read don't like the name. How it would affect the large number of people who might read one day is of more interest, as is the opinion of people who have chosen to read.

This choice seems to correlate highly with opinion of the name, indicating that is really is quite neutral in aggragate: it did not sway many in either direction.

I do like discussing the 'puzzle' that is rebranding. Again, I have not tried to change anyone's mind or laud the name. Just answered why to those discussing. I didn't bring it up, either, but it was a reasonable discussion, I felt.

While I am ok with the name chosen by yall (though I do think its kinda odd), I sort of agree with others, that going forward, your name should in some sense give a reader a clue as to what your purpose is. BSS does not directly do that. However, over time I guess it might not matter. But look forward to continue reading the content!

I would suggest something along the lines of thescooponnola or scooponnola, as it in some sense gives the reader an outline of what the website's purpose is and it ties into both the city and the team (be it indirectly for team). The domain for those are available! If you chose to utilize my terrible creativity.
