@ESPNSteinLine: Hearing New Orleans Pelicans covet freshly deposed Nuggets coach Melvin Hunt as an assistant for new coach Alvin Gentry's staff.

A lot of people thought he was gonna be the nuggets HC. So having 3 really good assistants sounds amazing.

Could have an entire staff of guys better than the last HC.

That's what I was thinking. MM and Bird Writes pretty much said the same thing.

who has made the other assistant hires? Demps with Gentry's input?

Wow, that would be huge. You would think that his first option is to be a lead assistant somewhere, but it would be incredible if we can pull this off.

It seems that way, but I'm not sure if we can know for certain. Supposedly Erman was contacted before Gentry was hired, so that would seem like a Demps choice.

It seems like Monty's almost becoming underrated. Assistants mostly work free of criticism, so I hesitate to say an assistant coach (or an entire staff) is better than him.

I have a tough time believing that Gentry's staff is being hired without, at the very least, his input.

I agree with this, but I think Erman was presented to Gentry by Demps and there was a discussion, rather than Erman being presented to Demps by Gentry. There is definitely discourse between all parties throughout the process.

This is the best coaching staff in NOLA NBA history.

Serious question that I know has been asked but I've never seen an answer to: have we made any changes on training staff? Aced?

Unless you're talking about in the last month, I've answered this question many times. Demps came in and cleaned house. We actually got 2 new head trainers in the first year. Ishop left this past year for Detroit and the #2 trainer with the Saints became our head trainer this year. I don't know the status of our corporate sponsor doctors, but the team regularly sees outside specialists anyway as they should.

Would be nice to add him to the staff, but we should not get ahead of ourselves. We thought we were going to add Borrego as well and he joined the Spurs.

Here's a link I found about Hunt, describing the type of coach and person that he is.

LINK
quote:

Hunt is an emotional leader with no shortage of inspirational quotes or encouraging adages at his disposal. You’d be hard pressed to get him to say anything negative about his team and when he does, it’s usually said in such a way as to come across as encouraging. He radiates positive energy and you can tell from watching him speak that positivity is something that he is both mindful of and something that comes naturally to him.

I wonder if it helps that he's from Tallulah, LA. Maybe he wants to come home for a year or two?

I tried to find if he grew up here, or if he was just born here, but I haven't had any luck. He went to Baylor.

Yeah I only found the same. He did attend Baylor for a little while when David Wesley was there, so I also think that can be a bonus in our favor.
