Sure. As far as I'm concerned, throw anything at the wall at this point.

Judging by some Bucks forums over the past few seasons, they wouldn't be sad to see Hammond go.

I'd still rather get JVG, Thibs or Schlenk, but if we're hamstrung by hiring people familiar to the old man, we could probably do worse, in fact we have been since Loomis is the one that chose to fire Monty and double down on Demps with the Gentry hire.

The whole situation is unfortunate.

"Pelicans have Anthony Davis, they can pick any coach they want!" We end up with an old, career retread/assistant.

Could probably have our choice of basketball ops guys/gms. Gonna likely end up with another wash out/friend of the organization, ready to build a team to mirror his 1989 Pistons.

Hammond has experience working for irrational ownership, so he'd fit right in.

Seriously, he'd be alright. Nothing too good or bad. Dude has been around the league for a long time.

Dumars as the new Loomis makes sense to me since it seems inevitable he will be involved. Having the hiring of his long time buddy in his back pocket isn't exactly the most encouraging sign of his work, though. At least Hammond isnt his progeny #freesam

Don't follow bball close enough to know if this is a good or bad move. I just want change and heads to roll. At this point I don't care whose they are and who they get replaced with. We'll deal with that another day.

WeeWee should run this franchise.

Dead on.
The more I look at Hammonds, it does not look like a positive move. The Bucks have had only one winning season in the 9 seasons he has been there. We really need to turn the team over to someone like JVG or Thibs. If that is not possible, get an up and comer like Schlenk.

Dumars, Hammond, Gentry & Ermann sound like one hell of a basketball staff.

Much better than Loomis, Demps, Lauscha

TBW had some analysis of the rumor, I didn't realize Hammond's ties to Gentry.

quote:

Hammond has numerous ties to both Joe Dumars and Alvin Gentry. Hammond was an assistant coach under Doug Collins with the Detroit Pistons and elevated to Gentry's lead assistant with the Pistons during the 1999 season. Hammond then followed Gentry to the Los Angeles Clippers as an assistant coach for the 2000-01 season. After the season Hammond moved back to Detroit, this time in the front office as the Vice President of Basketball Operations under Joe Dumars.

Hammond and Dumars worked extremely well together. In seven seasons together the Pistons made the playoffs every year and made the Eastern Conference Finals six times in the row. After that successful run Hammond moved on to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2008 and has been the General Manager there for eight seasons.

If they still believe in Gentry, big if, getting people familiar with him or his style makes sense, which is, in part why people want Schlenk.

It's funny with the Schlenk love: we have learned that you can't just replicate GS or SAS with one or even two hires. Needs to be a commitment throughout the organization to a "Pels Way," not just lip service to someone elses idea. Maybe Schlenk will be great. He works for the best franchise in the sport with sharp, committed owners, a thoughtful/diverse FO, and a willing coaching staff. But that aint happening in NO. They also lucked into one of the most revolutionary offensive players of all time and an All NBA level 2nd round pick.

My problem would be more in the "Dumars hires old buddy after surface level search" than his body of work.

:whispers: Sam Hinkie- should we? Dont think it happens, of course. Benson would get killed for the hire. I don't believe Hinkie would tank with Davis, and it would at least make this team interesting again

They've got about 7 million reasons to believe.

Right, the team's problems go well beyond replacing the GM. Benson has a reputation for not meddling, but he couldn't help but meddle, or at least provide incompetent enabling, with Loomis as President. I'd rather Dumars/Hammond than Loomis/Schlenk. My hope with Schlenk/JVG/Thibs is that they'd have enough cachet to tell Loomis and Benson to leave them alone.

I heard him on the Lowe Post the day before he quit and I wasn't impressed other than his work ethic. Maybe he's just a bad interviewee or was extra guarded with his situation, but I can't say I know much about his basketball philosophy, and the podcast format usually lends itself well to pulling that out.
