Does tonight's lottery shape the pace of our rebuild?

If we get in the top 3, are we more unlikely to trade the pick? We will take a player that we think will be a future starter. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of stars in this draft, so almost any player we select will take a little bit to develop.
That would mean we continue with a slower rebuild, correct?
If we get a pick 6-8, are we more likely to trade that pick for a veteran and move the rebuild along quickly? Or take a player with more college/international experience than can contribute more immediately?
So does tonight shape the immediate future of the franchise in a more pronounced way than "who we pick"?

I think they have enough cap space that it doesn't matter. Assuming Gordon is healthy or traded for someone ready to contribute, this team can easily take the next logical step forward with just internal development and $14 million worth of veteran Free Agents.
An interesting observation from McNamara, Otto Porter weighed less (198) than Austin Rivers (203) at the combine. As much as most of us see him filling a hole, there's no way he'll be ready to contribute much this season.

I think you're going to find that the trade value for top picks in this draft just doesn't warrant moving them.

Otto Porter reminds me of Tayshaun Prince a lot, and not just in terms of build. I'd like to have Tayshaun for the long haul...he's a good player that's had a good career, although certainly not a star. And I agree that he won't be ready to really contribute for at least a year or two.

Here's the problem. What is the 6-8th pick worth? I wouldn't think much.

Even stars take a little while to develop. CP3 was the 4th pick and it took him a while before he became great. Same with Rondo, George, Durant, Kobe, etc. AD still has another year or two of developing. We shouldn't expect to be great next year, just steady improvement.
To answer your question though, I think we take Len, Burke or Daric. One of them will be available at any spot we pick at.

Increasingly teams will be trying to either move veterans for picks/cap space, or selling late 1st round picks (to avoid guaranteed salary) in the wake of the new more draconian Cap/tax provisions.

It really depends on what we make of our pick if we end up as 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th.
If we get a top 3 pick, we should have enough talent to make the playoffs by next year between young guys and the cap room we have to bring in veterans.
If we pick later in the lottery, our rebuild probably moves back a year unless we find a diamond in the rough, given the dropoff in talent after the first 4-6 picks.

Have to see how it turns out tonight but if they find themselves able to draft Burke, and arent interested (nb4BURKEWILLBEASTAR), a Detroit trade makes sense. they need a pg
swap 1sts, stuckey, detroits 2nd. can take BPA (zeller, shabazz, mcw, len, mccollum, etc). stuckey is an expiring who can score off the bench, play some point, and be gordon insurance. can also be moved at the trade deadline

I wonder if there's any way that Monroe can be had from Detroit? I kind of doubt it...I would build my team around Drummond and Monroe, personally.

Detroit is currently slotted at 7th.
Unless we're 1-2 and they're 3, the only way I'd flip picks with them is if we're getting Greg Monroe as part of the deal, since they seem to have a logjam between him and Drummond.

I guess it depends how they project Monroe doing at the 4 instead of the 5, as he solely played center for 2 of the past 3 seasons and played a little bit of the 4 this season before Drummond's injury.

Agree with both of you on getting Monroe (also like Singler), just dont think the Pistons will give him up
Though David Falk, Monroes agent, had some interesting comments a few months back about his extension. Essentially he said "any team can give us max money so we are looking at other factors as we get closer to extension time"

If they dont think Monroe/Drummond will work, then Anderson should do it. Pels might have to take back stuckey or villanueva's corpse. both are expirings and taking one is worth it to get monroe

Do y'all think Detroit is stupid or something? The only way we are getting Monroe is if we give up Anthony Davis. Monroe and Drummond looked really good playing with each other at the end of the season.

I don't mind throwing in additional assets to Detroit and/or eating shite contracts if it means getting Monroe.
He would fill the gap at center for a long time, making Lopez immediately expendable and allowing us to focus on getting a long-term solution at the 3.

Wait..., I proposed getting Monroe as a RFA for 2014 and got laughed at. Detroit will have to make a choice between he and Drummond. It makes sense to go after him
