Does the cap explosion attract more non-draft-eligible Euros?

I am wondering if the explosion in the cap results in more euro playears or draft and stash players coming to the NBA. The extra money could make buyouts a non-issue. It could also make more conservative teams bring back draft and stash players as affordable options.

I haven't seen any discussion on this. Does anyone think deals could be had? Will Dell's Euro scouting pay off again?

That is an interesting question, but I'm not sure good players can just come over and bypass the draft process and rookie scale contracts. How did a guy like Mozgov come over as a Free Agent? Was it just age, he was 24 when he came over, or had he entered the draft before so it had been long enough since he went undrafted that he could be a FA?

If they haven't been drafted by age 23, they are officially free agents and cannot be drafted.

I believe teams are limited to 500k to help with a buyout, with the player responsible for the rest.

If guys are off rookie scale, maybe they can do a wink wink deal to pay them back? Seems like that would be some sort of violation

It's not really wink, wink, it's "My buyout is $2 million, give me the $500k you're allowed, pay me $500k more per year over your initial offer and I'll pay the rest off myself." It's basically what we did with Ayon. We could have gotten him for less if he had a cheaper buyout.

Yeah, that's kind of my point. We'll only be paying $500k that doesn't affect the cap per CBA rules. However, when a guy has a $1.25M buyout. Making $1.2m annually with a $500k buyout kicker is iffy. However, if that same guy now gets $3M or $4M annually with the cap explosion, the buyout becomes much easier for him to stomach.

Yeah. So the obvious questions would be-

can Euro teams start upping the buy out clauses?

how many Euros would the NBA realistically want to bring over?

how many Euros would realistically want to come over?

Of course, but they'll need to up the contract price commensurate to the increase in buyout.

That's the $64,000 question.

If it means an enormous pay increase, probably quite a few.

I wouldnt be so quick on that.

The guys you're talking about are mid career players. If the NBA has any interest, they're also likely making good money in Europe with other expenses covered (taxes and housing). Plus they usually have guaranteed big roles on their teams. Likely not the case in the NBA.

So, $5M USD/year is a jump from $1.5M EUR, but there are other things to consider besides strictly contract $$

Yeah if I was 25 and lived in Italy getting my house+expenses covered it'd be very difficult to get me to come to the U.S and be a likely bench warmer.

Give me italia with hot women/good food/great weather/guaranteed role.

But what happens to the Euro if Great Britain does leave the EU?

What is happening to salaries in the Euroleagues? I've heard a few comments in passing on Woj or Lowe podcasts that suggest things are tight in Europe right now. Contrast that to the NBA where in 2017 the money going to players will have nearly doubled vs. 5 years earlier. If the offhand anecdotal evidence is true it seems like there might be a pretty big disparity between NBA and International ball. And these comments were brought up in the context of could a DLeague that paid 2-3 players per team $100k - $150k keep more talent at home and possibly even steal 18 year old euros that typically don't get playing time.

If Austin Rivers gets $8 million per year, surely the Euroleague has some lesser paid guys that are much better than Austin Rivers. Do they have any wings better than Bazemore/Crabbe/etc Those guys are about to get $15+ and will probably start.

:insert NBA Brexit pun:

It will be interesting to watch.

The culture stuff is real, I think. How many players have left the US (either college or the DLeague) to take much better $$ in Europe? But, the opportunity might never be better for a lot of the Euro guys.

I've been waiting for the twats that now call themselves journalists to just go full retard and start saying "Hashtag Brexit" every time they mention it.

While I do think the culture thing does play a part, I think it plays more of a part for US guys going over there than vice versa, simply because the US guys grew up considering the euro leagues inferior.

that assumes the euro team plays ball. otherwise the player will have to take out a 7-figure loan

theoretically possible, but i just dunno if that becomes common

and these guys, if drafted, are still on the rookie scale

Seriously, though, it was just a thought and I thought it would make for a good discussion. I feel like so many of those guys are completely unknown to NBA fans, myself included.

Nice! That's actually a nice video tour of the training facilities.

Vladimir Jankovic Highlight

I'm hoping Jankovic gets a roster spot after watching that.
