He's 18, like I said he's picked up the game really fast for someone who just started playing 3 years ago. So they are hoping he continues to be a fast learner as he has shown.
He is 19 in 2 weeks. So, someone who has actually picked up the game is penalized because they do not have as high a "ceiling." Yet, someone who is still a work in progress, but is athletic, is given the benefit of the doubt because they are younger and therefore have a higher "ceiling." Sounds more like "boom or bust."

so let him learn one more year in college, then we'll know if he's really worthy of a top 5 pick, or not even a first rounder, just like Skal. But that ain't changing anytime soon and i can't blame him for going.
I would rather they start taking high school kids again, and if you don't go in the first round, you stay in college for 3 years before you can enter the draft. Maybe do something like if you get drafted in the 2nd round, you can choose to go to college for at least 2 years while the team retains that draft pick or you can choose to go to the NBA trying to make the team.

At the very least, Chriss is a 6'10" guy with a good frame who can stretch the floor, run in transition, protect the rim, and should be able to take many PF's off the dribble. If he ends up a below average rebounder, passer, and on defense, his size and shot still make him a useful player.

If his rebounding improves with effort/focus/technique and he continues to progress as a rim protector combined with developing his offensive skill set, he is a star. Definite gamble, but he has in demand skill sets and huge potential.

Really atheltic bigs with natural shooting mechanics and shot blocking ability are always going to be drafted high.

That's exactly the way it is and Chriss has a extremely high ceiling but also a extremely low floor.
