I hate when analytical guys call midrange shots a dumb zone.

It would be dumb for guys like Jason Smith or David West to shoot 3s but they are great at 18-20 foot set shots. That is enough to stretch bigs out of the paint=not dumb.

Jrue Holliday and Brian Roberts pulling up for long 2s with a foot on the line, though, can be called dumb.

They are called dumb because the risk isn't worth the reward. I don't mind Smith taking those shots, because he's probably better at that than shooting closer to the basket. It's dumb for Holiday to shoot mid range though, and he's taken more mid range shots than anything.

Also, it's the dumb zone because it's the area that defenses want you to take shots in.

Holiday has awful shot selection.. every time he drives to the basket he drives in the middle of a crowd and he gets stuffed.

I think Ryan makes good points, but part of the issues seems to be opposing stretch players, players that are a threat from long range not necessarily 3) and to get to the basket. These players, while naturally troublesome, seem to really torch this team.

I don't draw a hard line at long 2's a are bad, 3's are good . . . just recognizing that taking the longer shot more often is better at times (if they give it to you).

Which is strange because they have the personnel to go small (like we saw v Anderson) to match the stretch 4s.

Agreed. The can-do gap is what is concerning.
