Source: Alonzo Gee has declined his player option with the New Orleans Pelicans and he will become an unrestricted free agent as a result.

he played pretty well toward the end of last year. interesting that he's not waiting until next year to try to find a larger contract.

But who will else will we sign to brick wide open corner threes?

He played hard but he couldn't do one thing well in my eyes.

Honestly I am a bit surprised.

I can't imagine he will get too many phone calls.

Though this is good for the Pelicans at least.

Would have somewhat preferred he opted in. He could have made some sense on some bench units, especially next to Hield and Reke making most of the offense and DC/Ajinca enough spacing to open the lanes.

Maybe when he doesn't find much on the open market the Pels can bring him back as an end of the bench option.

Per Bird Writes, waiving Douglas gives us enough money for a 6th year player max.

I think he'll only be waived if we reel in a big fish i.e. Bazemore. Otherwise, it wouldn't shock me if he's brought back.

Agreed. He was solid for stretches last season.

But if we do sign a max guy, we're lucky that Dell is really good at finding end of bench guys, because we would be shallow as frick:
Jrue/Qpon/FA/AD/Asik = Not bad, potentially really good depending on the FA, QPon shooting over 37% from 3, and Asik returning to good defender/rebounder form

Reke/Hield/??/DC/Ajinca = Not bad. Doesn't really fit Gentry's ball movement system but actually makes a lot of sense on offense with guys that can spread the floor for Reke (and, to a lesser extent, Hield) to attack the rim.

But then you're looking at, what, Babbitt as your 9th guy? Diallo?

Luke played pretty well at the end of the year. I was happy to see him get a shot early in the season, but he played scared and stunk. He looked like a whole different player late in the year and created some good midrange shots instead of just "3 or pass."

I'm no insider, but I have my doubts that Reke is brought back. I feel the same about Babbitt but less so. Gentry seemed to like his shooting ability and he'd be a cheap vet bench piece which is needed for depth.

Diallo, hopefully, won't see the court much is first year. He needs time to develop.

Think of Dell's track record when has he ever gave a player away unless he had replacement level talent.

I posted this on PR, and I'll post it here too. I think these moves are by design as I think the staff feels they have a strong chance to land Bazemore or another big fish. I have no evidence to support that whatsoever, but it's just my gut feeling.

He's under contract. If he's not healthy, we may not have a choice.

And as much as everyone not named 504Byrd would hate to admit it, Reke would not only most likely be our best bench player, but he'd be a top 5-10 6th man in the league if healthy. Especially if he can maintain/come close to his 39% 3pt shooting last season. He doesn't fit what Gentry wants to do at all, but he has talent. Dumping him for depth makes sense, but if you don't spend that extra $11m wisely, it doesn't necessarily make us better.

Yes I know this is your gut feeling because the team had no say so in this.
