And how did those moves work out for those teams? Other GMs want to emulate those deals?
Well Dallas and Portland are still in the playoff hunt this year, and the Suns deal was an extra pick which will likely turn into 2 seconds. So no harm done by going for the playoffs.
And none of those moves went to a legit contender.

Also, the entire league just obliterated Kevin Love for slow feet and being exposed on defense. Anderson won't fair any better. You don't think Cleveland will run 1-4 PnR all day with Anderson trying to keep up with Kyrie in a 7 game series? Or Boston and IT2?
Also got to look at the flip side, Ryno in the lineup with Lowry and Derozan is scary nasty. Toronto has a legit shot at the #1 seed, which will let them avoid Boston and get homecourt advantage.
They will pay a premium for Ryno.

Dallas and Portland
The Rondo deal is a legitimate disaster for the Mavs. Crowder (excellent 2 way wing on a cheap deal), a mid first (possibly lotto pick), and Wright (who was killing teams for them) for Rondo and a gentleman's sweep last year is embarrassing. That they are a 6 seed in the worst western conference of the last 15 years is not much consolation. They could still miss the playoffs.
Portland is a little different. I get trying to do everything to keep Aldridge and making a run was the best way to do it. But it seemed like he knew he was testing UFA fairly early. The Matthews injury sort of screwed up that core because they were very good.
They could have kept Barton (young, 2 way wing on a cheap deal), guaranteed their 1st, let LMA, Lopez, and Matthews walk and still rebuild around Lillard/McCollum. I'd rather do that than trade for Afflalo, who just isn't very good.

legit contender
Dallas was one of the best teams in the league before the Rondo trade. After it, they struggled to a 7 seed and a gentleman's sweep.
Outside of Sheed to the Pistons a decade ago, I'd love to hear about any mid-season trades that actually worked out well for a contender/possible contender.

Anything is possible, as evidenced by the Dallas move. I highly doubt the Pels get more than the Toronto 1st and filler for Anderson. No one has any clue what UFA will look like this summer. Giving up a lot for that uncertainty is more difficult now than it ever has been

I hated the Asik signing from the start. Cut ties with the bum for a 2nd rounder for all I care. Move Davis to center and have him stop taking threes. Promise Anderson a starting PF spot and resign.
