25th in Offense + 12th in Defense + 10th in Pace = Bad Combination

22 games in I think the defensive improvement is real. Ryan and 42 were talking about this on the latest BSS podcast and made the point that so many of our turnovers are coming in the backcourt and leading to easy transition points that the defense is probably even better than 12th. So you have a top 10ish defense and a bottom 5 offense, it seems like fewer possessions would be the logical strategy, no?

Would this team be in the ballpark of .500 with a more conservative coach? If Baby Thibs takes over in February is he going to destroy the tank that Gentry was driving?

I think our pace is fine. We look lost when we have to work the entire shot clock. We do better when we push.

But the biggest issue is we cannot hit open shots.

Also we seem to turn the ball over more late in the game when we try to slow it down and eat the clock.

Were seriously 12th in defense? I never would have guessed that.

We have no ball handlers worth their salt outside of Jrue. Frazier's not bad but he pushes into some unfavorable situations and creates some disastrous turnovers at times. He doesn't create for Davis, but he doesn't get in his way either. There's that. Feed the beast.

It's funny. I'm reminded of an article from TBW which talked about how good Frazier is at improvising. It seemed like a positive at times, but he also seems to be weak at actually running the sets and getting to the spots on the floor. I'm pretty sure he borked at least the last play at the end of the Memphis first OT. Davis looked legit pissed at him. I think the design was for him to cut into the corner for the drive and kick, while Frazier was just standing at the elbow, resulting in a flailing 4v1 layup attempt by Davis instead of the expected wide open corner jumper.

Oddly enough, with Jrue out, Hield seems the most comfortable with the ball in his hands. It would certainly be worth the experiment having the second unit running through him instead of Galloway or Moore. He's consistently able to break his man down off the dribble. We look at him as a shooter, but he's arguably the best drive and kick player we have in the limited time we've seen him without Evans or Holiday suiting up. As weak as he's looked from outside, he's looked adequate enough in the other areas to at least get a look.

I honestly thought it would be 25th in pace. we look really slow for stretches and it just looks sloppy with all those shot clock violations.

If only we had a coach that could teach simple set plays.

Basically our offense is:
1. Look for AD in the post but only throw it in if he is WIDE open...and still miss him half the time.
2. Shoot a contested 3
3. When in doubt, Pick n Roll/Pop with AD to bail us out.

One thing Frazier has to stop doing is those pocket passes to Asik. He's gotta know Asik is gonna kick them into the third row. Asik is such a momentum killer on offense.

i don't think so. their offense sucks because they have one good NBA creator on the roster.

fast/slow...whatever. it won't matter
