With the Pels roughly $7mm into the luxury tax for next season (leaves off Jax, Liddell, and Seabron…and presumably we waive Temple to help get under the tax) are we expecting the front office to evaluate trades in order to stay under the cap?

If so, then we really only have Graham’s $12mm and Kira’s $5.7mm to trade and plan to keep on the roster next year without sending out one of our more core guys like JV, Larry, or one of the young/back of roster guys only making $1.5-3mm, which obviously doesn’t do much for a veteran.

That’s $18mm or so in salary available to carry forward.

If we are trying to pickup more than 1 player, then it seems likely a trade including a more core player may be necessary, unless they plan to go ahead into the luxury tax.

**this all presumes my math is correct, which can be a dangerous assumption

Looking at that math, I like the idea of trading DG for Mo Bamba (keep Kira) and paying the protected 1st the Magic have indicated they want for Mo.

I don't see how they avoid the tax unless the trades they make at the deadline are for expiring players that they move on from or resign cheap.

I think the tax is now a given if we are going to be competing.

Tax isn’t calculated until salary accrues through the season, but I see little way we get under it without paying someone to take a guy like Graham. And that gets harder to do the longer it gets into the season.

It definitely looks like a tall task.

Maybe the Pels could swing something like Jax to SAS/Pacers for a 2nd (since they both have cap space to take a swing on a still young former lottery pick), then trade that second (maybe try to add Billy on one end to keep from having to burn another 2nd) to Orlando in a Bamba for DG swap. Then the Pels would dump Temple’s option and squeeze under in a sort of half-compete/half-punt till next season to commit type move???

DG, Kira, Temple

But if we are going to make a run, we will have to pay for a year or 2.
