Your thoughts on the War on Drugs

I understand there's a big love affair with that band on here. Been jamming them awhile but am shocked they are as beloved as they are. What is it about them that everyone is digging so much? I like the springsteen-esque moments and the great soundtrack they provide to a long drive but their lyricism is Bon Iver convoluted. No idea what the frick he's singing about but maybe it just takes time.
Thoughts?
ETA: I should mention I've only had exposure to the latest record so take that into account.

Lost in the Dream is easily one of my favorite albums. It gets better with each listen, especially great for a long drive. It does take time to grow on you for sure. Red Eyes I liked from the start, fantastic song. The rest took a few listens.

I dig them because they released the greatest driving soundtrack I've ever heard

Jar of Flies is the GOAT road music IMO.

Good but I like Kurt Vile better.

Lost in the Dream gets way too much love and is in fact a very mediocre album.
There are at least 10 albums from 2014 I think are clearly better

Well that's your opinion. The fact that it was mentioned in pretty much every album of the year article is enough to say its far from mediocre.

Cloud nothings, real estate, TVotR, and spoon are the only ones even in the mix. regardless ,nothing you listed is "clearly" better

I freaking love "Lost in the Dream," but I agree that it's nothing revolutionary that we're going to be talking about 10 years from now.
As others said, though, it's an album that gets better with repeated listenings of the entire thing. It really is a solid album. What made people, though, say, "Damn, this is the best thing to come out this year" is beyond me. There are other albums more ambitious and interesting, imo.

War on Drugs have always been great. I remember trying to get people here to like them back in 2011, before their first (also very good) full length album Slave Ambient was released.

Media love is the final arbiter of greatness.
Signed Justin Bieber.....

Bieber gets mentioned in album of the year categories?
This album is fantastic to me. But if someone doesn't enjoy it that's fine. Music is subjective. Its the most enjoyable album I've heard in years, to me.

sales, but not critical praise. two very big differences.

I didn't like the latest album that much at first. I've grown to like it more, but it boreda me to tears as much as The National does sometimes.

Well thats your opinion
The OP says "Your thoughts on the War on Drugs" so I gave mine. I don't care if you don't agree but don't tell me I'm wrong when its my opinion

I have never heard of even one of these bands or albums. They could be great but they need better marketing if they are.
