So it cannot be any band that started before 1980 (no Hendrix, Moon, Clapton, etc.). Also, no Steve Vai on guitar because his true start was in 1979.

Who you got?

Mine:

Lead Singer - Mike Patton of Faith No More/Mr. Bungle
Bass - Peter Hook of Joy Division/New Order
Rhythm Guitar - Izzy Stradlin of Guns N Roses
Lead Guitar - Billy Duffy of the Cult
Drum - Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater

Obviously, this is a band that would have HUGE and vast creative differences, but I would love to see it happen in my heaven one day as these 5 all have had a major impact on me. They may not be the best, overall, but they're all very strong.

Who you got?

NO question they were awesome. The sad part is that 25 percent to maybe 33 percent of Music Board regulars would know only "Handle With Care" and that 95 percent of all college-aged students would know nothing at all and if they did, it was because of their parent(s)' love...and most of those who have high school /college students weren't aware of them, either I bet.

I agree...that was as good as it got, especially for 1988.

I also thought the VH1 show should have been a recurring reality television event. Ted Nugent, Sebastian Bach, Scott Ian, and Jason Bonham...just imagine had they redone that show every year after?

Not sure who the 5th would be

Based on your other choices, I would have to go with John Petrucci of Dream Theater. I think he'd fit in nicely with that bunch.

Ryan Adams
Warren Haynes
Jack White
Dave Schools
Chad Smith

The solo trade offs between Haynes and White with a Schools/Smith groove would be nice. Ryan can sing and write.

Ritchie Blackmore on guitar
Jon Lord on keyboards
Roger Glover on bass
Ian Paice on drums
Ian Gillan vocals

This band broke up in the summer of 1973, but they got back together in 1984. So Deep Purple is my choice.

Thats solid man. When i first read that title, I immediately thought Het, Carey and M.Shadows as the three main pieces. I know alot of people wi shite on Zakk Wylde, but I have always loved him because my guitar style so similar to his. He's a blues player. He also writes some incredibly heavy and bluesy style riffs with Black Label. So...
V- M. Shadows
R- Hetfield (AJFA writing style with Black Album guitar tone)
L- Wylde (No Rest for Wicked Tone and lead style, pre-wah with his modern riff writing)
B- John Campbell (Lamb of God, fantastic player and amazing tone)
D- Carey (his unique approach and time sequences would lead to some epic riffs with Hetfield writing rhythm music. He would basically be able to do what Ulrich always tried to do with throwing off time drum pieces in, but they would actually work and would be effortless)
Honestly just thinking about how big and heavy an album by these guys all clicking together would be gets me excited.

This is too difficult for me.

Even V: I agree with many choices, esp. Cornell, Weiland, M.Shadows. But I don't know how I would make a band without Vedder at vocals. Don't think I could.

Any band of musicians after 1980 has to include Jack Bruce. Yes, he is the best bass player, but of course is a great vocalist too, when he's not playing cello or piano, he can do it all. But that being said, the man (R.I.P.) brings to mind endless possibilities of other vocalists & guitarist of the last 30 years that he could work with. One guitarist he didn't get a chance to work with (at least as far as I know) that I think would have been great with is Tom Morello. One drummer I always liked was Tim Alexander of Primus.
