Y'all know I'm a Tool fan. Saw them in April. I must say I was disappointed

And here's why:
First, the production was top notch. It always is. The music, the visuals, the singing...it was all perfect.
But something was lacking with the performance - that something was Maynard.
He just stood in the shadows to the left of Danny. You only got a glimpse of Maynard when the background visuals would lighten to reveal his silhouette.
The only time he came to the front of the stage was at the very end of the show when the band was clapping, bowing, and basking in the celebration of the audience.
Maynard came out and simply did a karate bow and walked off the stage.
As a Tool fan I get it and I expected it after reading reactions from people who had already seen the 2016 tour. I know Maynard, as lead singer, doesn't want to overshadow the talented band members...but Maynard is a BIG reason Tool fans love Tool.
He went from front-and-center in the 1990s to nonexistent in 2016 (with exception to his voice). For all I know that wasn't even Maynard up there. It could've been an imposter simply gyrating in the shadows to the cadence of the music and a recording of Maynard's vocals.
When I last saw Tool, Maynard was front-and-center, damn near naked, playfully insulting the crowd and venue, and he had bright red dots painted on his bald head, face, arms, torso, and legs. A strong black light followed every movement which made the red dots glow bright pink on the dark smoky stage.
It was fricking mesmerizing. I'll never forget it.
This time it felt like I was watching Tool play a concert without Maynard. It was a great concert experience, but the magic was gone.
If they release another album, I hope Maynard doesn't isolate himself to the shadows because we, the fans, deserve to see his performance.
Otherwise...frick him
(and yes, I know this is exactly what he wants. LOL)

This. It's been a part of the act for a long time now.

I hadn't seen them live since 1996

So, do we think anything approaching a full tour is coming with this "new album"?
I seriously need to see them before I and they get too old - that window is closing fast. I almost went to that last New Orleans show. I just need to move heaven and earth next time.

Do it. Don't pass it up. They were pretty fantastic that night.

Saw them 2010-ish in DC and came away unimpressed for this reason as well. Just sort of trudged on with what looked like only the other 3 on stage. It is what he does though.
Saw Puscifer within a year of that and was more entertained.

He's been hidden on stage for at least 11 years now.

If rumors of a double album are true, yes I think they will do a full tour and I also think it will be their last album.
Therefore, you need to see them as soon as you can.

My old guitar teacher went to a concert where all you saw was his silhouette crouching behind a curtain. A silhouette. Crouched. Behind a curtain. That's all he got
They were unreal in NOLA

Dude, He's been in the back for at least 15 years...
It's wishful thinking of you to expect a change in his performance.
It is funny though. Adam and Justin aren't some super energetic players. There's really not a whole lot to see from them. If anything, Danny Carey should be front and center. He's a lot of fun to watch.

frick, people! I just said several posts above that I last saw them in 1996.
Therefore, one can assume that I haven't seen them that last 10 or 15 years.

I've been frickin my wife, having children, and building a life, baw......all to the soundtrack to Tool music.
In fact, when my daughter's head popped outta my wife's vagina, the doctor let me pull her out while Aenima played in the background.
It was an emotionally intense moment.
The next song that played: Rosetta Stoned.
While they were stitching her up, the lyrics "Goddamn...shite the bed" came on. I promptly turned off the music.
We all had a long laugh.

Used to be a big fan of this band. But Maynard dun fricked it up because because he became the occultist pothead version of post-2000 Scott Stapp.
