The others (sans Cobain) had really good voices for rock music.

You have the dumbs if you think they have crappy voices.

It's probable he doesn't "get" old school rock music.

Axl Rose has the largest vocal range of just about any popular singer in the history of music. He has more range than Mariah Carey and Christina Aruilera.

Not classic rock.

Ehhhh...All of those bands started over 25 years ago. Can PJ and Nirvana be grunge and also classic rock? I don't see why not.

To say he has a "crappy" voice is ludicrous.

If the OP had said they don't have the silky smooth voices of the old crooners like Sinatra, Martin, Crosby etc. we could agree with that.

Some classic rock singers could probably have developed those smooth style voices. Others probably not. Doesn't mean crappy though.

Some other "good" ones

Classic Rock is a certain specific era. It's not just an album that is over a certain number of years old.

Every frontman listed in the op has an instantly recognizable voice. I could pick any recording spanning their long careers and you would know immediately who it was, whether you had ever heard the song or not. You wouldn't say that kind of sounds like Axl Rose, you'd say that's Axl frickin Rose!!

I was stuck in an airport for hours yesterday and got so sick of autotune that I put in earplugs and then headphones over that. I'm not sure anybody sings these days.

The music played in the 70's was blue collar, blues tinged or progressive rock.

The voice is part of the art, a perfect voice isn't as gritty and doesn't always convey the emotions of a song. Many of those singers didn't have a perfect voice, but their voice was perfect for what they did.

Exactly. Imagine a great singer singing Lounge Act. Doesn't work without Cobain's grit.

Robbie Robertson wasn't that great of a singer man. They turned off his mic in the last waltz lol

Whoever mentioned Robbie Robertson as a great singer in the first page obviously didn't listen to much of his singing lol.
