Eddie Vetter, Kurt Cobain,Axl Rose.....on down. None of them would have won any singing contests. Even ancient Rock was pretty bad Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne, Mick Jagger.... they could scream and that's about that.

Has sound recording gotten better, or was it a style of singing that made good singers scream instead of sing ?

I think your definition of classic is a bit loose. And pop/rock/rap stars don't need incredible voices. It's more about the music and beats than the spoken words.

Not classic rock. Kurt Cobain did everything possible as a vocalist to sound nothing like commercial radio. Punk never espoused musical virtuosity.

Axl Rose

One of the most parodied singers in the last thirty years. Who honestly thinks he is a great singer? His stage presence, bravado, and unique style are what makes him a reputable frontman. Also, not classic rock.

Ozzy Osbourne

Granted he can't sing much more than a single note, his iconic vocal style is partially responsible for the erection of heavy metal. Also, NOT CLASSIC ROCK. Black Sabbath never has and never will be "classic rock" regardless of what commercial radio attempts to lump them with.

You honestly picked some shitty examples to illustrate your point. Half of the singers you listed are not even "classic rock" singers.

Take a listen to each of the following and tell met that classic rock singers have crappy voices:
-Burton Cummings
-Paul Rodgers
-Freddie Mercury
-Ann Wilson
-Don Henley & Glenn Frey
-Phil Collins
-Steve Perry

Just what the frick do you want from a rock n roll singer, kid? Go listen to to Luciano Pavarotti, or Andrea Boccelli if you want pretty vocals.

Smart on your part to exclude Lennon and McCartney from the trash list, as Lennon had an original and very melodic voice and McCartney had one of the best singing voices in pop history. So much for all the filth in classic rock singers, if you listen to Rolling Stones ballads and country songs, you hear lots of melody, subtlety and beauty in Jagger's voice one rarely hears in the rockers.

Not classic rock.

And anyway, Axl at his prime had scientifically one of the broadest ranges of any popular singer. His voice was amazing.

Eddie Vedder has a fantastic voice
Robert Plant has a fantastic voice

The others (sans Cobain) had really good voices for rock music.

You have the dumbs if you think they have crappy voices.

Most of my favorite singers can't sing. But they have passion, energy and great lyrics.

Every time I see that commercial with John Bom Jovi singing that horrible song, I can help but realize how bad his voice is. Was it always that bad but just masked by his band or is it age?

Isn't Bob Dylan the undisputed GOAT on this subject?
