I'm inclined to say Townes Van Zandt. However

Sorrow and Blues are different, so my next guy is probably Gram Parsons. These cats make me sad in the best way.

Jeff Tweedy

I try to stay busy
I do the dishes, I mow the lawn
I try to keep myself occupied
Even though I know you're not coming home

I try to keep the house nice and neat
I make my bed, I change the sheets
I even learned how to use the washing machine
Keeping things clean doesn't change anything

What am I gonna do when I run out of shirts to fold?
What am I gonna do when I run out of lawn to mow?
What am I gonna do if you never come home?
Tell me, oh, what am I gonna do?

I hate it, I hate it here
When you're gone

I caught myself thinking
I caught myself thinking once again
Have to try to keep my mind out of this
Try not to pretend

I'll check the phone, I'll check the mail
I'll check the phone again, I call your mom
She says you're not there and I should take care

I hate it here
When you're gone
I hate it, I hate it here
When you're gone

I try to stay busy
I take out the trash, I sweep the floor
Try to keep myself occupied
'Cause I know you don't live here anymore

Otis and Mick just had so much soul in how they conveyed their songs as well as David Ruffin from The Temptations, you immediately knew it was sorrow when you heard their ballads. Also, Mick is a magnificent country singer.

Agree with all of the above, but would add Jackson Browne's "The Pretender" album. Wrote most of it after his then wife committed suicide.

Upvote, queues up Exile....

Hey let him follow you down,
Way underground wind and he's bound.
Bound to follow you down,
Just a dead beat right off the street.
Bound to follow you down.

Well the ballrooms and smelly bordellos
And dressing rooms filled with parasites.
On stage the band has got problems,
They're a bag of nerves on first nights.
He ain't tied down to no home town,
Yeah, and he thought he was wreckless.
You think he's bad, he thinks you're mad,
Yeah, and the guitar player gets restless.

And his coat is torn and frayed,
It's seen much better days.
Just as long as the guitar plays
Let it steal your heart away,
Let it steal your heart away.

And his coat is torn and frayed,
It's seen much better days.
Just as long as the guitar plays
Let it steal your heart away,

Joe's got a cough, sounds kind a rough,
Yeah, and the codeine to fix it.
Doctor prescribes, drug store supplies,
Who's gonna help him to kick it

And his coat is torn and frayed,
It's seen much better days.
Just as long as the guitar plays
Let it steal your heart away,
Let it steal your heart away.

And his coat is torn and frayed,
It's seen much better days.
Just as long as the guitar plays
Just as long as the guitar plays
Just as long as the guitar plays
Just as long as the guitar plays

Don't exclude I Got The Blues, Shine a Light, Love in Vain and Moonlight Mile for that matter.

I think Kris Kristofferson did a great job at this.

Some others I might add are Robert Smith and Morrissey.

Yeah, his writing portfolio is pretty extensive, some of that stuff will rip your heart out.

So is Pete Townshend's in that regard, his lyrics are very eloquent in their expression of such emotions.

Sorry, but when I saw the word 'sorrow' one of my favorite all-time albums came to mind- S.F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things...

Who else on earth would've had the imagination to conjure up such lyrics? Particularly one hailing from Dartford, Kent, England? Just amazing.
