Probably a good guitarist, but his music makes me want to drown kittens.

Pretty much agreed, but you know him when you hear him, and that's something. "Europa" is sublime.

What was the question? Guitarists comparable to Santana?

The definition of "great guitarist" certainly is different to many people. To me, a great guitarist is someone who creates a style of music or elevates that style into a permanent part of the main stream of the music scene. There aren't many of those: Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, Duane Allman and SRV are at the top of the class in the rock genre. Each of these guys created a sound that every person who has ever picked up a guitar dreams of being that good and being that creative one day. Then there's the second group; I'll call them the "enhancers".

The enhancers are guys who are considered great because they've added to the technical format of how the instrument is played. They've taken a style and lifted it to a new level because they bring perfection to it. Vai, Van Halen, Bonamassa, Robben Ford, Robin Trower, Satriani, Andy Timmons are just a few guys that fall into this category. These guys are great because they're so technically superior to everyone else on the planet that they stand alone at the top.

For me, I'll go with creators and inventors; that's where true genius lies.

ETA my ranking:

1. Hendrix
2. Clapton
3. Duane Allman
4. Santana
5. SRV

(I've ranked them this way with the advantage of having seen each of these guys play in live concerts and small venues on many different occasions)

"Soul Sacrifice" alone catapults Santana into the upper stratosphere of spectacular guitarists, mon

Allman above Clapton

McLauglin is also up there

That one is really a tough one for me. I can go either way; they're that close. A better case can be made for Allman because what he accomplished in such a short time. We have almost 50 years of history to evaluate Clapton.

Well, I guess I don't have them in the upper class because I never really was all that big into the Grateful Dead and Phish. The Grateful Dead was more of a cult band to me when I was growing up.

He is certainly up there and he fits my definition of "creator". I'm just not into fusion very much...I'm getting to like a little more than I did.

Like I said, the definition has so many variables. One of those is personal taste.

As "cliche" as it may be Hendrix is #1.

Electric Ladyland alone gives him that distinction, let alone the rest of his career.

It's not cliche for anyone who has ever played a guitar at a high level...I can assure you.

Gilmour and Santana are very comparable. Each has a distinctive style and tone that is very recognizable. Both play with taste and soulfulness and can get very aggressive when the song calls for it. Neither is technically special, and both play in a narrow stylistic range. Both are a perfect fit for the music they play. Both are great artists. Gilmour is a much better singer.

You're missing out. Jerry is a wizard with the way he branches out but still keeps his jams within the framework of the song. He might not be the best but he's my favorite by far.

Not a single mention of Jeff Beck or Mark Knopfler in this thread.

For shame.

Clapton is insanely overrated.

For my money...it didn't get any better than that 10 year period where he was featured multiple times playing the same fills over-and-over again on a series of mediocre pop songs.
