Because of rap making such huge inroads in the rock market in the last 20 years the potential audience for rock acts has decreased considerably. Add to this that mid-level touring acts have always had the most difficulty finding suitable venues (unknowns play whatever shithole they can get; superstars play the top of the line places).
During the golden age BR got national acts thanks to LSU and the 5% entertainment tax in NO (some acts would even play the MS Gulf Coast to avoid the latter). Those days are gone though.
As I've said before in my legendary Silos story (even more legendary than my Better Than Ezra story), the aforementioned Silos -- one of the greatest bands of the last 25 years -- played the Red Star (a stopover on their way to Austin, of course) and barely 50 people showed up. And at least 45 of them spent the entire evening at the bar never glancing at the stage.

Good God, why would you ever want to sit outside in south LA?

Also, face it you live in small towns.
The population of metro Atlanta is about the same as all of LA.

How south are you all talking, I can't imagine it is too easy to put in an amphitheater with decent sightlines around here, it all seems really really flat, and the swampy nature of the area has to make it a little more difficult. Add in the amount of rain that happens during the summer (I live in New Orleans so speaking of my experience here) and the heat, I think nice indoor venue is better for here.

Baton Rouge is my hometown, but it's a pretty lousy music city and always has been.
You must be fairly young. Baton Rouge used to be a major stop on major tours before Ossie Brown.

So when did BR go down the shitter?
Posted on 3/5/14 at 1:37 pm to TheDoc
Even all through out the 80s, alot of the big acts of the time were coming through BR... granted hair metal was dominating the charts back then

How does a shithole like Kansas City have such a sweet venue?
because it's a city of 2 million with a great musical history and a vibrant music scene where shows actually sell-out. it's far from a shithole
Starlight is an awesome venue to see a show. hopefully the rumors hold true on phish coming back this summer
