When did Country Music Lose its Feel?

I'm 19, brought up on the legends, Merle, Kris, Johnny, George, Waylon, you get the picture.
The songs actually had depth and meaning. You could feel what those men were feeling. And not every song sounded the same.
I can't even turn on country music now without just shaking my head and thinking "this pretty-boy shite isn't country." Even, and just as uncountry as the men, the women of country music now just suck.
What the frick happened to country music?

Pick up truck broke down and the dog wouldn't hunt.

Mainstream Country is no longer the white man blues.
However the country music genre is just as strong now as its ever been. So much talent breaking through the red dirt/Texas scene

I miss the days when the women were ugly,
And the men were all 40 years old
Cause you had to say something for ppl to listen,
Now they just do what they're told
Now it's all about idols and pretty blonde hair,
And how many trucks you can sell
These days we're in AM country heaven,
and FM country hell

My all time favorite in country is Garth brooks. Do I lose points to the country purists?

The only thing wrong with Garth is that he paved the road for today's trash. I enjoy his music for the most part but at the end of the day he stole the soul from the genre

I can see this viewpoint. Garth pretty much ushered in Nashville Pop and made it main stream.
But damn I can listen to his songs anytime.

Oh I love his music and I've got to believe that even he is a little disappointed in the artists that followed in his foot steps

Hate to break it to y'all, but Nashville didn't "ruin" country music. Lotta good burgers in this town; nobody forcing you to eat McDonald's. -Jason Isbell

So Garth was the turning point?

Thought this was mostly common knowledge?

Jason isbell is a fricking douche. An insanely talented douche but a douch all the same. And his quote totally explains why he is so much of a bigger draw now in Nashville then he was elsewhere........
That's sarcasm btw

I agree 100 %. And I have always been a fan of Brooks & Dunn but they didn't do the genre any favors with this :

Btw I by no means think that Nashville ruined country music. There are a lot of great musicians located there who make great honest tunes. HOWEVER the people who ARE ruining country music also reside there.

For me, it was when the Highwaymen started to die.

If it was common knowledge, there would be no point to this thread.
Apparently others have differing opinions, bro.

When Mutt Lange and Shania Twain made country music palatable to 12-21 year old women the death march had begun.
