I'm talking 1978-1985ish. I love post punk because it, in many cases, takes the elements of punk and just refines them. Paste Magazine did a poll a couple of years ago that had the top spot for Television "Marquee Moon" and then Joy Division and Talking Heads reserved about 5 of the top 20 album spots. How many of you besides Cdawg and me are fans of this "genre" (which can include some new wave, dark wave, no wave, alt rock, Gothic rock, et al).

My tops in no particular order:

The Cult -- "Dreamtime" and "Love" (Electric CERTAINLY does not fall into this category...you get it).

The Chameleons -- "Script of the Bridge"

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry -- "Talk About the Weather"

Joy Division -- "Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer"

Suicide -- 2nd album

Wire -- "Pink Flag"

Alien Sex Fiend -- "Maximum Security"

Echo and the Bunnymen -- "Crocodiles"

Killing Joke -- Debut album; self-titled

Fields of the Nephilim -- Dawnrazor

The Cure -- Pornography

The Mission -- "God's Own Medicine"

The Gun Club "The Las Vegas Story"

The Jesus and Mary Chain -- "The Darklands"

I wanna know some of yours so I can gather some new music from this awesome genre of music.

Got some great ones listed here. REM - Murmer would be worth checking out.

Also, a little out of the date range but The Queen is Dead by the Smiths and Disintegration by the Cure also very good.

Damned good...maybe the best, but it came out in 1989. I wanted just those albums from late 70's to mid 80's.

Lots of good choices already...

Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight

Mission of Burma - Vs.

The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms (or The Good Earth)

Rank and File - Sundown

Husker Du - Zen Arcade (or New Day Rising)

Volcano Suns - The Bright Orange Years

Wire - Pink Flag

Then you have all those NZ bands that created the Dunedin Sound at that time.. they mainly released singles, comps, eps during that timeframe.. the most notable being...

The Clean

The Chills

The Verlaines - Hallelujah All the Way Home

I listened to this album yesterday. It is damn strong. I need to give it a few mire before it's my all-time favorite.

TO each his own. Vegas and Miami are my two favorite albums by them. I realize The Fire of Love is the more "groundbreaking" of the three.

For most it is. I like Badlands. I like both.

I do not know why this files under post-punk. I see others in the media classify it as such, but I have never understood why.

It's such a broad category by many... I personally wouldn't have classified many of the bands mentioned as such, but I've broadened my perspective when such topics come up on this board...

Sonic Youth were very influential and at the forefront of the art/noise rock scene in the early 80s NYC (along with Pussy Galore, White Zombie, etc.)

This is some of my favorite music, but I don't really know what fits and what doesn't. Lots of my favorites already listed. Question, does The Cars(1978) fit?

Thats a greatest hits album.....
But it did introduce a lot of non-goths in this country to the Cure.

The Smithereens had that great album in this time frame as well (I think so, anyway).

Best? It would literally change for me daily.

I never knew there were so many genres until Wikipedia started listing bands under a certain category.

I lot of this post-punk I like starts to fall into industrial or gothic to power pop. Maybe those are sub genres of this post punk. You've listed a lot of mine. I'd have to really think about a top 10 or so.
