and why?

for me it is Dirty South...it seems like they were all on their songwriting game...I think the infusion/addition of Jason Isbell refreshed the older two songwriters...it was also early enough for Jason that he wasn't going off the deep end yet with the booze...at least it seems that he was at least controlling it better...almost every song is good to me...and they flow...it's hard for me to even name a favorite song...but if my arm was twisted it would likely be "Lookout Mountain"....

thoughts?

Decoration Day

To me a much better indication of the songwriting prowess of each.

It's a classic.

Dirty South is good, but DD was just such a great jump from Southern Rock Opera, it represents the high water mark.

3 guitars or a life of crime.

Cooley (Pin Hits the Shell) & Isbell's (Decoration Day) best songs with the Trucker's puts it over the edge.

I am biased. They were so raw when they were touring SRO, Jason hadn't really fit with the band and it was evident at Chelseas. When DD hit the scene, the work that they had done on tour really translated to the studio and they were just on fire for about 3 years after.

listening to "Decoration Day" right now...it is probably JI's best with the band...followed very closely with "Goddamn Lonely Love"

Agreed. Both of those are really special.

He really accelerated DBT and I still miss the lineup (especially with Birddog on bass).

When the whole bringing Shonna into the band thing went down, you could see the breakup like a train light in the distance.

Jason was a sloppy mess before shows, ST trying to wrangle him in. 2005 was not kind to the band. Still never stopped me from hitting the Rock Show every chance I could.

Southern Rock Opera, and it's not really that close. It's far and away their best album.

Used to be Brighter Than Creation's Dark because: Cooley. As time went on, I started appreciating Isbell more and more, so now it's Dirty South because it has both my favorite Isbell Song and my favorite Cooley song.

SRO - Gave you the sense of where they came from, the backdrop so to speak for the stories that poured out of them in the future.

DD - Really introduced you to the power of the 3 headed monster and firmed their place as a THE preeminent southern ROCK band of the era.

Dirty South - best produced, slickest studio album. Ushered in the wave of DBT as "stars".

You can't go wrong with any of them.

Yeah, not so much. Everyone I know was soundly disappointed in DD upon its release after the bar they set with SRO. There are some good songs on DD, but it doesn't hold a candle to SRO.

You are a fricktard. DD was critically well received after the momentum of the SRO explosion.

As much as I love the Holy Trinity of SRO, DD, and TDS, the album I find myself listening to the most is Brighter Than Creation's Dark. It's just such a great alubm at setting a kod. I can sit in my easy chair, drink a glass of whiskey, and lose myself in that record.

Also, as pointed out, it's Cooley's tour de force.

Tough call between The Dirty South and Decoration Day for me. SRO just has too many filler songs for me.

Hell, don't discount The Fine Print. There are some great songs on that "album."
