What is it about Radiohead that makes them so polarizing?

Going through the Oasis v. Radiohead thread and it seems that about half the posters think the question isn't close because Radiohead is just amazing, and the other half think it isn't close because they always thought Radiohead sucked.

Nobody really appears to hate Oasis, but some people just think it's laughable that Oasis could be mentioned in the same breath with the mighty mighty Radiohead.

And methinks that thread is a microcosm for how Radiohead is perceived generally. Group A legitimately loves Radiohead and believe it's some of the best music they've ever heard. Group B has been scratching their collective heads for years trying to figure out what the hell the Group A peeps like about Radiohead. As best I can tell, there is no in between.

How is it that a certain percentage of the population can hear these songs and be blown away by how epic they are, while the remainder of the population is bewildered as to how anyone can legitimately love songs that simply don't sound good.

1. Why does this happen with Radiohead? What is it about their music than can elicit such diametrically opposed reactions?

2. Are there any other bands like this?

Radiohead puts on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. The people that hate on them are country music fans that haven't seen them or many other good bands for that matter.

Critically adored music that isn't "radio friendly." The music is difficult, especially starting with OK Computer, and usually requires several listens. Some people are hooked and listen over and over and over again. Others can't get beyond the first listen and it's just background noise.

Animal Collective/Dirty Projectors

Edit- That the music is difficult doesn't imply that it is better. Just trying to say it isn't easily accessible.

I love Animal Collective's studio output (one of my favorite bands of the aughts actually) but they are absolutely horrible live.

i'm not a huge Radiohead fan but I can see why someone would think it's laughable to compare them to Oasis.

Whether you love their art or not - Radiohead is creative. They aren't afraid to try new things and experiment with new sounds, leaving traditional song structure behind. Most of their albums go in different directions with no two really alike. And they've done it remarkably well.

Nothing wrong with Oasis, but they are just vanilla Beatles-esque pop songs.

Most people I know who hate Oasis do so because the Gallaghers are assholes.

As for Radiohead, their music is just kind of strange and completely hookless. I like it, but it takes awhile to get used to.

I haven't.

But I like country music about as much as I like a foul-smelling vagina.

I like a lot of their very early stuff, but starting with Kid A kinda got bored with them... I dont hate them...

I saw them live, post Kid A and it was a good show... I just havent paid attention to them in probably a decade or so...

These two things seem like they often go together. When an artist tries to do something that has an emphasis on being original it seems like the first accusations are usually that it is pretentious, and it is usually less accessible because it is different than what most people are used to hearing.

I think that it is fair to also say that pretentious people have a tendency to cling to these types of artists to edify their superiority and individuality. The stereotypical hipster seems to be the modern archetype of this kind of character.

I think most people dislike them because they take themselves so seriously, like the cure cancer or something with their music.
