When I think prog. rock it's ELP. Everything they did but especially Brain Salad. But the rest is worth a listen too.

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick is greatness even if it is largely an inside joke.

Early Kansas I'd call prog. rock and liked a lot. Leftoverature got old as did the rest of their later stuff.

Zappa verges on it at times though it's impossible to pin him down with a category.

Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Center of the Earth was interesting. Not great but reasonably good.

I don't know where the creativity in music went but there was tons more back then. Prog. rock is just the tip of the iceberg.

Haven't seen this one mentioned. Various Pink Floyd and early Rush would be in my favorites too.

Mastodon - The Hunter

since he is not into metal I would point him to Crack the Skye, I am a HUGE fan of every Mastodon album but Skye is not as heavy as the others.
Other good harder Prog bands I like
Pain of Salvation
Riverside

Journey's self-titled first album Journey was a favorite in high school. Their next two albums, Look Into The Future and Next, were also quality music for teenage stoners.

Coolidge will haunt me if I don't mention Hawkwind in this thread.

yes 'relayer'....i admit i'd prefer rick wakeman or even tony kaye over patrick moraz for the long haul, but the band really does crush it on this album. "gates of delirium" is yes' most epic of epics IMO.

pink floyd 'animals'....i know DSOTM or WYWH are the usual "go to" picks, but i just love the stripped-down (by comparison) sound of 'animals'. it's the first floyd album i heard, so maybe i'm biased in that regard, but even today i gravitate toward it more than the others.

rush 'moving pictures'....yes, it's been played to death, but i'm confident if i heard it today with a fresh set of ears, i'd still put it WAY above '2112', which as a longtime fan, i think has its share of filler & is quite overrated.

and while i'll get flamed, i still have a soft spot for queen's 'sheer heart attack'. sure, it lacks the pretentiousness of your "typical" prog-rock albums, so some folks would argue against it even being a prog album in the first place, but i disagree. IMO they got the most bang for their buck with the resources available to them at the time, and they weren't afraid to explore many different musical styles, yet were able to put it all together & make a cohesive album.

there are many newer prog albums that i enjoy too, but i still need more time to pass by before seeing if they'd make my final "best" cut...

Not a big fan of prog rock, but I do have a soft spot for Yes. My favorite album of theirs is The Yes Album. First off, it's Steve Howe completely cut loose, and he's by far the biggest reason I like the band. Howe is an utter bad arse. Most prog bands can't rock at all, but Yes can really bring it (a kick arse rhythm section helps, too).

Also, and this is where I show I'm not a big prog fan at all, I prefer Tony Kaye to Rck Wakeman. I love the sound of a Hammond organ, and it was a mistake to ditch that sound for the Moog synthesizer, which now sounds dated as all hell. The Yes Album is the only time Yes had it's very best lineup: Anderson, Bruford, Kaye, Howe, and Squire.

Also, Starship Trooper, Your is No Disgrace, and Seen All Good People. Great songs.
