Bruce/Baker from Cream

Followed by Jones/Bonham from Led Zeppelin

Define "modern". What is the age limit?

And, "level" regarding what? How deep he plays in the pocket? Funky-ness? Technical ability?

Well I meant drummers that are still living.

I guess my preference in drumming is subjective, just like music in general. I recognize that drummer like Portnoy is very skilled. He is one of the top hard rock/metal drummers out there, but to me that isn't comparable to someone who has the "groove".

To me, this is perfection.

And my link from the first page.

Great choices, Drummin Fool.
Don't forget Billy Cox and Jimi. He was a bass player unlike Noel.

What do you think of Noel's songs on Axis and ElectricLadyaland?

I like them. It's an English guy sounding English, combined with Mitch's drumming and Jimi's playing.

Just in case you didn't know, Jimi played the leads on 'She's So Fine' and that spacey excellent riff on the end of 'Little Miss Strange'.

The English nude cover of ElectricLadyland got me banned for about 8 months, oh well.

Bass players and drummers dude. You're better than that my man.

You're Who selection is definitely money.

Barring Mick Taylor, I thing Bill Wyman was the best musician with the Stones.

I definitely agree that Steve Jordan is in the top tier of funk/groove drummers out there today.

I like different drummers for different reasons. You can learn different things from them all to help elevate your own skill level.

I also find few drummers comparable to SJ, but here are a few more that I feel would be on the same tier:

Stanton Moore
Bernard Purdie
Billy Martin
Jojo Mayer
Dave Weckl
David Garibaldi
Terreon Gully

I am a huge fan of Noel Redding's playing on Jimi's tunes, but I am not a big fan of his own songs. I am not enamored with "She's So Fine" or "Little Miss Strange". He is a great bass player, but not a great song writer.

Billy Cox is great, but I preferred Jimi's earlier works to his later works, which has nothing to do with Billy Cox. It probably has more to do with Mitch Mitchell vs. Buddy Miles, than with the bass playing. Not to take anything away from Buddy Miles' ability, he is great, but Mitch Mitchell could play off of Jimi so much better, and was much more creative.

I would love to hear what a Hendrix/Cox/Mitchell line-up would have come up with.

Buddy Miles is a better singer than Jimi though.

Are you trying to tell us that you don't know shite about The Who or Rush?

Geddy Lee is an unbelievably talented bassist, and Neil Peart is considered one of the best drummers to ever live.

You're better than that, my man.

Is Danny Carey "modern"? Because if you play it for him once, and show him the chart, I'll wager he can play it - and play it "funky" if called for.

And I say that while recognizing that Jordan is an extraordinary drummer.

Lee is a bassist, and peart is a drummer that play in the same band.

What are you talking about?

Danny Carey is a skilled drummer, no doubt. But its apples and oranges here.
