I know this is a crappy thread title - sorry.

Here's the premise:

I heard a Dire Straits song (Lady Writer) that I hadn't heard before and really liked it. I went to Amazon Music and listened to a few albums, and came away pretty impressed. I was familiar with the hits, but found I really liked a ton of their songs.

What are some other mainstream artists with an underappreciated back catalog?

Like - should I be listening to the Eurythmics? Or, uh... Tears for Fears? Bachman-Turner Overdrive?

Seems like many people who hate REM only know things recorded after Document.

Way too many people think of Zenyatta and forward for The Police. Outlandos D'Amour is one of the best albums ever.

The Cars fit a similar model. Heartbeat City etc. The Cars(Album) is like a greatest hits.

I always felt many people only knew Soul Asylum's work in the 90s...

Their 80s stuff is where it's at...

Solid choice. You should also check out some of Mark Knopfler's solo stuff. It's just as good. Boom, Like That is such a great song.

Maybe it's cliche now since his music is on Spotify now, but Prince's entire catalog is so amazing and spans a few different genres.

Pretty much any good band/artist has a solid, underappreciated back catalog.

I love Soul Asylum's stuff. The Cars is a good call as well.

Both are great examples of what I'm talking about. A few very well known songs, but a ton of under heard good music behind it.

Early Hall & Oates before they became too commercial.

Anything from 1973 - 1980.

Abandoned Luncheonette
War Babies
The Silver Album
Bigger Than Both Of Us
Beauty On A Back Street
Along the Red Ledge
X-Static
Voices

...all very enjoyable.

Blind Melon. Wasn't a huge fan but saw that stupid bee suit video about 1000 times in the 90's. They have a really good bunch of cd's I discovered a few years ago. They wrote some fine songs.

Dire Straits are amazing. J Giles Band has a surprisingly good back catalog.

Dexy's Midnight Runners are sort of the classic answer to this, a great band known only for their one hit.

Their first two albums were great, and "Touch and Go" is underrated.
