I never heard of anyone claiming Pete Townshend was at the top of guitarists in technical ability

Know many die hard Who fans?

When I call him "a rhythm guitarist pressed into service as a lead" (and, full disclosure, I like The Who and some of his solo work) - they throw rocks at me.

Hendrix seemed to very free with his praise for other guitarists. He also had nice things to say about Robbie Robertson and Rory Gallagher.

And Billy Gibbons, among others

All those double stops, hammer-on and pull offs and very fluid legato type stratty likes come from him.

Hendrix probably lifted these techniques from any number of classical, flamingo, or jazz players, those techniques can be found in those genres all the way back to the first recorded music.

As an example Eddie Van Halen was not anywhere close to the first to do two hand tapping.

Hendrix was a god among men.

People to this day still can't truly duplicate him.
You can play the exact same thing as him with the exact same equipment he did and still not "sound" like him.

For nearly every other guitarist that ever lived there is some random YouTuber with a cover of their songs that comes really damn close to duplicating the original.

For Jimi's music they all sound like frauds.

Hendrix skill and style of play was unmatched in his day. Jimmy Page and SRV aren't far behind jimi IMO

Hendrix thought this guy was the better than himself.

He was also a big fan of Billy Gibbons.
