"Lionel Ritchie"
It was extremely fashionable especially in the 80s for some people to dismiss or downplay commercially successful solo artists that came that came from prominent bands. Lionel Ritchie is a good example.
The most glaring example in my humble opinion , however, is Phil Collins. Extremely underrated and underappreciated as a front man for Genesis and as a solo artist. No musician that successful has caught as much unwarranted hate as he has. I love Peter Gabriel as a musician and front man but Genesis not only maintained when he left, they thrived under Phil Collins.

I agree with the earlier poster mentioning Cinderella. I never was that into "hair metal" but there seemed to be a little more musical depth to Cinderella. Love the song and video to "Nobody's Fool".
As for forgotten bands, I'll go with Oingo Boingo. They showed up in a couple of prominent 80s movie soundtracks ( Back To School and Weird Science) but never got the mainstream acclaim they deserved. I knew about "Weird Science" and "Dead Man's Party" from the aforementioned movies but never really knew anything else from them. Came across "Stay" and "Just Another Day" from listening to First Wave on XM radio. Those are incredible songs.
Forgotten band from the 90s is definitely Crash Test Dummies. God Shuffled His Feet is arguably THE single most underrated album of the 90s.

Blues Traveler was underrated imho. They had some brilliant stuff that never made the radio. Travelers and Thieves was a very good album. "Ivory Tusk" and "The Best Part" are two awesome songs that should have been two of their biggest hits.

They play lots of Chicago on XM26 Classic Vinyl.
I think John Hiatt would get my vote for underrated.
