Album review:
Visage - Visage
Let me start off by saying I love early 80's synthpop. It's catchy, danceable, a little cheesy but in a good way, and just good fricking music. This is a solid if unspectacular early 80's synthpop album, with a few very good tracks. It reminds me a little bit of Soft Cell in the vocals, and a little bit of New Order in the sort of cold electronic sound of it. It's good, but it's probably not as good as either of those groups.
- The first half is probably better than the second half. The first three songs are all very solid. He sounds like a Iggy Pop The Idiot-era vocally on Viasge, which I like. Also the French chorus is a nice touch. I love the whip in Blocks on Blocks and the little electro jam in the middle. The drums in The Dancer remind me of Adam in the Ants (which is a good thing imo).
-Tar is kind of a silly anti-smoking song. Not my favorite song on the album by any means.
-Fade to Grey is a fricking jam right there. Kind of reminds me of an Arcade Fire song actually, kind of slow and anthemic electronic. Good song, best song on the album.
-Malpaso Man is a decent song, I like the midi horns in it, don't like the cheesy 80's guitar. Lyrics are a little cheesy, it's kind of like an 80's novelty sounding song. They kind of try to sound like Adam and the Ants on this one too.
-Mind of a Toy. Meh.
-Moon over Moscow is going to be played often during late night cocaine parties in my near future. fricking right I love this song. I may like this one more than Fade the Grey, it's close. The hums in the background and "ahhhhs" remind me a lot of Sisters of Mercy. I fricking love this kind of 80's electronic music.
-Visa-age is ok, reminds me of a Gary Numan song.
-The Steps sucks, worst song on the album. Pointless and tedious ambient nonsense.
Overall rating: 7.5/10
Best songs: Blocks on Blocks, Fade to Grey, Moon over Moscow

Well dan, I got to get the daily phish dose in, ill swing through some of Beatles, talking heads, VU albums on a weekly basis as well as tSouls. Then I enjoy some live gov't mule, jrad lately, in short I'd rather choose some good live shite than let this board give me 5 new indie albums to check out and write a review on
- oh and you've listened to all that and still thing tDB is the best band out there. Shocking

quote:have heard them before, didn't listen
Neon Indian- Era Extraña (chillwave)
quote:didn't listen
Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep (hardcore rap/horrorcore)
quote:didn't listen
The Tontons - Make Out King and Other Stories of Love (indie)
quote:skipped through 4 or 5 tracks. a little too theatrical, jesus christ superstar sounding for me.
Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake (classic psychedelic rock)
quote:i liked Pond much better than Small Faces. didn't dwell on the album too much, but Moth Wings is easily the stand out track to me.
Pond - Beard, Wives, Denim (psychedelic Rock)
quote:listened to about the first half of this. don't have much experience with this genre, but it was enjoyable from what i heard.
Father John Misty - Fear Fun
quote:liked these guys the most. the album feels short and is a quick listen, but i probably played it in the background this weekend 3 or 4 times. don't have a favorite song as i think the album can stand alone in its entirety. i was really big on them after the first listen, but after subsequent listens, i'm thinking maybe they aren't as special as i thought. regardless, i liked it.
Black Books - The Big Idea (Southern Dream Pop)
never heard of "southern dream pop," so i went to some similar artists on spotify. now i'm digging some Social Studies, especially the first song i found called Terracur. not usually big on chick singers, but this song is good.
quote:much like tranny porn, i have to really be in the mood for tranny music. this weekend just wasn't that time.
Visage - Visage (synthpop)
