Not a metal head...have never been a TRUE metal head, but there have been those who have come around and made me enjoy the genre and seek concerts (ftw...metal concerts are the absolute best). I'm not a death metal guy...I am more of a purist. Here are my 5:

1. Pantera...without a doubt. After hearing Vulgar Display of Power the first time (I wasn't introduced to Cowboys from Hell until after), I was absolutely hooked.

2. DOWN...speaking of^. Musically, I think they're better...energy wise...it's Pantera and it ain't even close. Down may almost not fit this category. NOLA is an incredible album.

3. Ministry...whether it's metal or Industrial or not, The Mind is A Terrible Thing to Taste combined with the previous Land of Rape and Honey = Psalm 69 -- a metal album that is just beyond classification.

4. Slayer -- Seasons in the Abyss...wow. Hearing that for the first time almost made me become a trench-coat-wearing, long-haired, tattooed a-hole...the a-hole part is all I fulfilled, but damn if that didn't make me think FM radio was garbage.

5. Helmet -- They may not be "metal" either, but Meantime from 1992 likely has been played in the thousands and on at least 60 different CD players as I still have my original copy that my brother gave me Christmas of 1992.

I am just not into the Lamb of God or Morbid Angel type stuff. I like the heavy, heavy pounding bass and less of the screaming -- unless it's Phil.

HON Mention: Fear factory (92 to 98 speaking); Sepultura

WHAT YOU GOT?

You're damn right they aren't metal.

How the frick do either of these bands qualify as "pure" heavy metal? They are far less metal than any extreme metal band.

You're missing out. You probably have listened to brutal death metal and you are turned off by the over-the-top vocal delivery by certain bands.

Give Carcass, Death, and Atheist a listen. They are arguably three of the most influential death metal bands and all of them offer a slightly more "accessible" vocal delivery. Plus, they incorporate a number of progressive elements into their music.

Inspired isn't the word I would choose to employ in regards to your post. If we are talking about the most impactful albums then this is my list in no particular order:

Dio - Holy Diver
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pantera - Great Southern Trendkill
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Death - Symbolic

You need to stop pretending to know more than you do.

"20 years on, and there’s still nothing like Psalm 69. Paul Barker quit too many albums ago, and he is missed. Al put the band to rest after trying and failing to replicate Psalm 69 too many times in a row. Like any good junkie, he’s already back at it with his latest album, Relapse—what else would he call it? Industrial metal never produced anything else at this level, and it never needed to—not after Psalm 69 said it all and said it right the first time around. We’ll always have Psalm 69, and it’s all we need—listening today, the high is just as dirty, just as harsh, just as good as it ever was."

"How the frick?" and "extreme metal"? Maybe you need to go to the O-T and gripe. That's why I come here...because I feel like I am talking to a real group of people who remind me of the friends I had back when I listened to these bands. If I listed this topic on the OT, I would expect such bitter, dickless comments from someone, but this is a place where thankfully 95 percent of what we post is usually argued but respected.

Define what "pure" metal is...You are taking what I said waaaaaaayyyyyyy out of context. It's not a type of metal, idiot.

Helmet is an alternative metal band from New York City formed in 1989. They released Meantime (their ...)...this under their own Youtube video.

I have seen all 7 i Just mentioned along with bands like Lamb of God, Soilwork, In Flames, etc. I have not seen the three bands you mentioned, but I know Carcass well. They're NOT FOR ME. They're FOR YOU.

ive Carcass, Death, and Atheist a lesson

I was listening to Carcass back when MTV only played them at 11 pm or later on "The Pit" or whatever that show was called. You're missing the point, a-hole. And that's what you are -- an a-hole. I listed the 5 METAL albums (not bands) that inspired me. NOT YOU. Thanks for adding YOUR own bullshite.

Plus, they incorporate a number of progressive elements into their music.

Me listening to these tonight...yeah that;'ll change my mind. I have heard them all except Atheist. Congrats, you got me there.

Since you are going to mention this though, I'd like St Amant Steve to give you the same treatment he just gave me. It's not under his "label" I'd bet. If he thinks Tool is metal and Ministry isn't, he's just trying to argue with me for arguing. I'll but Tool as a type of metal band though...especially Opiate and Undertow Tool.

Psalm 69 was one of the first really heavy albums I heard. I think I may have even heard it before Pantera. Ministry always has a special place in my heart. Saw them last week and even met Al before the show.

Helmet was one of those bands that was accepted by metal fans and alternative fans in the early 90s. Their pre Meantime stuff is really raw and heavy. I always liked that they looked like normal guys, no long hair or tattoos or anything like that.

Some argue just to argue. FWIW, all the band's you listed are badass, and they're all metal.

Rust in Peace should be on everyone's inspirational metal list honestly.

I am more of a fan of the post rock/metal, so F#A# (Infinity) by Godspeed You! Black Emperor is probably my number 1.

Yeah, in 1992 they certainly were unmatched. This is a band that changed their formula time and time again. While I LOVE The Land of Rape and Honey, this is THE album where Ministry got it right. Filth Pig was a good follow-up...couldn't hold a candle to 69, but what could? I saw them in August, 1999 at H.O.B. in NOla and once again in Dallas at the Bronco Bowl and they were the LOUDEST band I had heard because they incorporated so many band members.

The live concert they do on Youtube where they promote TMIATTTT is wowza good.

Wow. How was that? I'd likely fumble and stumble my words if I actually met him. He's one of my all-time favorite icons of metal and industrial.

I got there a little early and was standing in the will call line and Al was just walking around saying hi to everyone. I just shook his hand and said nice to see you again. I forgot what he said. It was a pretty cool moment. The show was wild as always.
