I only know one song from John Prine, “When I Get to Heaven”. I heard it at work years ago and have never forgotten it. I’m interested in checking out more of his work. Anyone have any suggestions, favorite albums or songs of his that you love? Where should I start?

Souvenirs is a good one.
Especially with Steve Goodman.

I like some of his stuff but I would not go that far

>Paradise

This is my favorite Prine song.

Jim & Jesse do a great bluegrass cover w/superb harmony. Unfortunately their version unforgivably cuts the classic last verse (which you can hear in Prine's original)

If you haven't heard it, check out Sturgill Simpson's version on Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows Vol. 2.

It's amazing the songs that you know from other artists that you may not realize he wrote or co-wrote.
David Alan Coe - You Never Even Called Me by My Name (co-write with Steve Goodman)
Don Williams - Love Is On A Roll (co-write with Roger Cook)
George Strait - I Just Want to Dance With You (co-write with Roger Cook)

Was lucky enough to see him on his last tour before he died. His last album is great! He was still writing at a high level.

He had neck cancer (1998) and lung cancer (2013) throughout his career which left him with a rougher voice than he had in his earlier recordings.

Summer’s End (song on last album)

The video is incredibly powerful. It was his call out to the opioid crisis, and he put out a video that really tugs the heartstrings. What a great song.

Check out this versionwhere Steve leads off. It's the one on the box set and by far my favorite version.

As to the OP, I absolutely love John Prine, and to me, the essentials are:
Sam Stone
That's the Wat That the World Goes Round
Fish and Whistle
Illegal Smile
Souvenirs
Speed of the Sound of Loneliness
Please Don't Bury Me
Dear Abby

Amazing songwriter.

Country Bob Dylan basically. Just didn’t really go electric.

“Sittin’ in the ice, without any clothes. NAKED AS THE EYES OF A CLOWN”

Awesome line. And it’s kind of a throw away line stuck in a good but silly song.

Was a national treasure. Any YouTube video of him singing or being interviewed is awesome.

Passed up a chance to see him in Austin in 2019. frick Covid and frick cancer which tore his arse up before Covid got him.

Clapton played Houston a while back and I payed a bit too much for a ticket. frick it. If they’re old and I like them. I’m seeing them now.
