Call me crazy but I actually like the new direction both Mastodon and Baroness are taking. If I wanted to listen to the sound of Leviathan/Blood Mountain/Crack the Skye or Red/Blue, then I would just listen to those records. I'm sure both will eventually try and go back to their original sound though.

Will you elaborate, please.

I too noticed the Mastodon influence on Purple. I've never been a huge fan of Mastodon, but I like the way Baroness does it.

Well,

You probably know that they had a horrific bus crash while touring in Europe. Their bus went off a cliff and plunged a pretty good distance. The driver was killed and most of the band ended up with extended stays in the hospital. Two original members of the band have subsequently quit as a result of the trauma.

Baizley wasn't sure he was ever going to be ever to play again and went through an extended rehab process. So the song, to me, is about his hospital stay and emerging from it. The chlorine and wine, to me, symbolizes the tour life they were leading. Swimming in hotel pools, drinking wine, enjoying yourself. Then all of that being changed by the crash. But he emerges on the other side of that as well. The really triumphant "Please, don't lay me down, under the rocks where I found my place in the ground" is like begging not to end his life with this incident.

Yeah when you say it like that.

For me the sound shifted more vocally than in their sound. I guess incorporating Brann almost too much for my liking. Honestly their last release has gotten not much playtime for me. Levithan/BM/CTS were bibles for me as albums back in the day

Noice! Listening now. I'm laughing my arse off at the description though. This line:

Classic.

I don't remember if Conan has been mentioned in this thread but their new album is really good. Heavy, crushing doom at its finest. Not a big fan of the vocals though. LINK
