Journey was/is mainstream pop-rock only, not saying they're "bad", based on their popularity alone, they do what they do pretty well.
Steely Dan was actually innovative, not "a style" of music, they transformed styles and genres of blues, avante-garde jazz, soul, etc into their different works. If you think they are just two different styles then you fall far short of understanding why they are different.
