Trying to come up with a list. I'll start at the Southwest corner. For simplicity, let's stay away from Cajun bands who have a song named after every town (Opelousas stomp, Crowley waltz, etc.)

Lake Charles:
Lake Charles (Lucinda Williams)
Up on Cripple Creek (The Band)
Continental Trailway Blues (Steve Earl)
Departing Louisiana (Bruce Robison and Katy Willis)

Sulphur
Sulphur to Sugarcane (Elvis Costello)
The aforementioned Continental Trailway Blues (Steve Earle)

Rayne
Rayne, LA (Bruce Robison)

Waylon Jennings - Lonesome, On'ry, and Mean

quote:

On a Greyhound bus Lord I'm travelin' this morning I'm goin' to Shreveport and down to New Orleans Been travlin' these highways and doin' things my way It's been making me lonesome on'ry and mean.

Guy Clark - Baton Rouge

quote:

I'm gonna leave Texarkana I'm goin' down to Louisiana I'm gonna try my luck in Baton Rouge I'm gonna follow ol red river down Till I see the lights of town I ain't gonna get no sleep in Baton Rouge

I know you said no BR....but it's fricking Guy Clark, RIP.

The John Prine addition reminded me to add this song:

Donald and Lydia (John Prine). Although not mentioned by name in the song, this was a girl in Leesville and a boy in Ft. Polk, as per his commentary before playing the song on a live album).

I was thinking about that just the other day. That is far as hell. Maybe it is meant jokingly, but likely just to keep the rhythm of the song.

Also love Amos Moses....heeuh comes AAAAAAAAAmos

I came up with a perfectly good lyric

"It was down in Louisiana just a country mile from Texarkana..."

That makes a sort of literal sense

For whoever wrote the song - and it was apparently around before Lead Belly -- it was important for some reason to make Texarkana closer to LA than it is.

Either that or they were just sloppy.

Doesn't mention a city or town, but Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight is great. I like the Emmylou Harris cover the best.
