I only saw them one time. At Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport in 1982 Diver Down tour. I just remember the pot haze floating thick above the floor and the festival seating where people basically just jockeyed for position and beat the crap out of each other. Raucous is the word I would use to describe it.

I'd rather see VH with DLR on his worst night, playing the Diver Down album twice in its entirety, than seeing the 20 best Van Hagar songs of my choice.

Couldn't have said it any better than this.

DLR era Van Halen, certainly.

But after seeing some of their more recent live performances, Hagar may actually be better for them at this stage in their careers.

I understand the love for DLR but I've never understood why liking DLR means you have to hate Sammy. I like them both.

It seems he gets the blame for bringing a made-for-billboard quality to the band. But I think the lean towards a more commercial sound in the late 80's had less to do with Sammy and more to do making money and evolving to stay relevant.

Regardless, I still choose DLR over Sammy. But it's closer than everyone seems to make it.

this exactly. I don't see how this is even a question. Hell might as well ask if VH was better with dave or gary cherone.

Anyone who grew up (teen years) during their rise to stardom likely prefers and will always think of VH with DLR. I didn't think Sammy was bad and to their credit they kept it going by picking Sammy to replace DLR. However, for me, VH is only VH with DLR.

The commercialism began with 1984 and post-VH, DLR was all about pumping out commericialized crap. At least Sammy is out there still making music.

SH solo is also definitely greater than DLR solo.

Came in here to chime in something like this. I think it is just from Joe Dirt and the "Van Hagar" line. Want to hate anybody, hate the Van Halen brothers. More than a few stories and interviews blaming the brothers for all of the issues.

I recommend SH's autobiography Red. Good book about his career, highlighting on the good and bad of the VH years and addresses in great candor Alex and Eddie as people and musicians.
