It really never got better for Rod than when he was in the Jeff Beck Group and Faces, his voice was at its most raw and powerful unlike the disco and new wave stuff he did that diminished his stature in my eyes.

His early solo work as very good, but I agree his peak was Beck and Faces both of which are severely underrated IMO.

Been listening to early JBG with Stewart for 2 days now in the truck. I wish they had hung together for a longer period.

Stay With Me From the same performance.

I still blast this one with the top down. I had a millenial ask me once what this song was--when I told him he said he thinks he had heard of Rod Stewart before...

He was the quintessencial Scotsman then, his partying probably put AC~DC to shame. You can´t keep that up forever. BTW, I´m not defending his disco days, I agree, he is in the Aerosmith and ZZ Top bucket of reputation tarnishing.

The whole performance from that BBC show is fantastic. It's called Sounds for Saturday. Rod and the late great Ronnie Lane sing McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed before it was hit for PM.

Get the box set Five Guys Walk Into A Bar - you will not be disappointed. Being a huge Stones fan, I heard of the Faces because of Woody and had heard Stay With Me and Ooh La LA...... but I kick myself for not checking them out sooner. Crazy to think they were only around from '70 to '75. A lot of great songs:

Stay With Me (obviously)
Miss Judy's Farm
Glad and Sorry
Ooh La La
Too Bad
Silicone Grown
I Wish It Would Rain Down

Some of the Faces guys played on Rod's early solo stuff. Download or get their stuff. Can't recommend it enough.

"Miss Judy's Farm"

When they came on stage I hollered "MISS JUDY"
and again "MISS JUDY"

Rodney looked at me, gave me the power sign and said "That's showing your blood!"

Turned to the band and opened with Miss Judy's Farm!

Loved it.

That is awesome! Would have loved to have been young enough to have seen them. I bet they were awesome live in person.

Maybe - they were all heavy drinkers and were noted for occasionally having sets that were not that great because they were bombed. Saw them in '74 in N.O., and amazingly they were sober enough to perform a very good show.

I've heard interviews with Rod where he said he never expected it all to last this long. He figured he'd be done and in another line of work by the time he was 30.

Typical supergroup. A lot of talent, too much ego to keep it all together.

Another factor that hurt that quartet was lack of viable songwriting, Stewart/Wood essentially monopolized the songwriting efforts for the Beck-Ola album but it was nowhere near what Rod would be getting in a couple of years with Maggie May and such. Lack of quality songwriting always hurts fledgling bands and Jeff likely knew it couldn't sustain.

Nobody mastered and maintained that gravelly voice like
Rod Stewart. And was able to maintain it! He can't shout over a guitar heavy rock band anymore, but he's 70+ !

Maybe that's why they never lasted that long? No way he could keep that up over a band for years. He needed to become a crooner for his voices survival. Kind of like disco. He had to do disco because thats what you did!

He also doesn't look too bad for 71, almost looks like 61. Remarkable considering all the drugs and alcohol he consumed.

I think solo was more money for him. I love Rod but he was getting too big for a band. Ronnie Lane quit the Faces because Rod was spending too much time on solo stuff and they were tired of being billed as Rod Stewart and the Faces by promoters to get more tix sales. Rod didn't even like that.

Rod has always maintained that Woody leaving to play with the Stones on the '75 tour really hurt the Faces but I don't think that's not entirely true. Whenever a talk of a Faces reunion would come up, Rod would say that Woody and Stones schedule interfered but there were plenty of down time with the Stones in the last 20 years. Once it finally started getting ramped up, Ian unexpectedly died not long ago. Ian was excited to reunite for a tour or just a few shows. I blame Rod for it not happening.

Just tell them it's the outro music for Wedding Crashers.

Oh shite, that was in 2006...is even THAT too old for millennials.

Yeah - he was an obvious star and it was time to go solo. It was obviously his intent and Woody started working with Keith as Mick Taylor was flaming out.

I read an interview with Keith and they asked him about stealing Woody and breaking up the Faces. He said that band was done as Stewart was already out the door. The Stones were the biggest band in the world and there was no way Woody could turn that down.
