Which ten guitarists do yo consider to have the most beautiful tone and smooth style?
(Save the most rockin' and badass axe men for the next list)
The first ten that come to mind for me are:
Warren Haynes
Jeff Beck
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Ritchie Blackmore
Duane Allman
David Gilmore
John Frusciante
John Petrucci
Eric Clapton

Jimmy Page is not really what I would consider smooth. He has a great sound and he did really inventive stuff. All the others deserve mention.
Some guys I would add for consideration are Roy Buchanan, Nils Lofgren and Rory Gallagher for having distinctive sounds in addition to being well above average in technique.

I can agree with that statement. I guess I had a few particular songs in mind when I decided to mention him.
However, he is definitely more along the lines of being heavy and unpolished.

Don't think I can limit this to just 10.
Mark Knopfler - smooth, expressive style; very subtle.
Robin Trower - my favorite tone of all the guitarists.
Jeff Beck - does amazing things with the guitar that nobody else does.
Stevie Ray - great sense of rhythm and economy of motion, very fluid style.
Joe Bonamassa - fantastic tone and seriously good chops; lacks some soul.
John Fogerty - overall not the greatest guitarist but very smooth & fluid.
David Gilmour - great tone and one of the best at bending notes, ghost bends, bend vibrato, etc.
Eric Johnson - very distinctive tone and playing style.
Warren Haynes - one of the most versatile players out there.
John Mayer - musically gifted but needs to settle into a style.
Larry Carlton - Mr. ES-335, has a great sound, very jazzy style.
Robert Cray - clean, jangly sound that works well behind his vocals.

I saw Page with Led Zeppelin at the Forum in L.A. in 1975, and it is still the most memorable display of guitar playing I have witnessed. I saw them again in 1977 in Oakland, and I couldn't believe it was the same guitarist. Page was really sloppy, and he looked uninterested.

I have never really listened to much of his work other than "Cliffs of Dover", but I will be sure to check him out soon.
