I'm in my mid-20s and based on your list alone I would presume that you are younger than me.

ACDC - For those about to Rock ( it's got a cannon on there!!)

Deep down I know AC/DC is hard rock, but from 1978-1982 they were arguably just as heavy as Judas Priest and even Motorhead at times.

As much as I hate to admit it sometimes, metal has become a highly fluid and diverse genre of music.

It did that almost immediately. Even the 60s rock acts were experimenting with heavier sounds - heavily, but not exclusively, because of the marriage of the Gibson Les Paul(or SG) with the Marshall.

Was Hendrix "metal"? Probably not, but one has to admit that he was flirting with the line.

2 songs from my list - Born to be Wild and Stone Cold Crazy - obviously, Born to be Wild has "heavy metal thunder" in the lyrics. Anyone who can't hear the birth of speed metal or thrash in Stone Cold Crazy isn't listening. And no one is ever going to argue that either band is a traditional heavy metal act. Ditto for The Beatles' Helter Skelter, as far as hearing what was to be called "heavy metal."

Is anybody talking about Zeppelin being heavy metal in this thread? I may have missed it, but I don't think so. Ditto for Deep Purple. This thread tends to follow the stereotype of metal being Sabbath, then jumping to NWOBHM (primarily Maiden and Priest), THEN jumping to thrash.

There is a lot to consider in between those gaps and even before Sabbath.

I had a Purple song in my list, and wanted to include Zep's Kashmir, but didn't want to argue semantics with everybody. That song is 'heavy' metal to me, more in the vibe and the lyrics than anything else.

I love what Norway and Sweden have contributed to metal music. Even now, guys like Ola Englund are putting out great material.

Storm of the Lights Bane changed my life, and with that, I mean the way I played guitar, drums etc. Jon Nödtveidt was incredibly talented imo, and a huge influence.

TBH I wish Thulcandra didn't rip them off so much, so I could.

I'm not sure if there is another region of the world that puts out more quality music artists per capita than Norway and Sweden. Hell, even their Scandinavian brothers in Finland, Denmark, and Iceland have done some phenomenal things.

It just seems like the best elements of American culture and music influenced these artists from the past two or three generations. Thrash, death, and prog have all undergone a discernibly Nordic shift in sound and style.

There was a time not long ago when it would have been absurd to lump any non-British or American band with the revered Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Metallica, Slayer, etc. But now, how can you not include bands as influential as At the Gates, Opeth, Meshuggah, Entombed, Dismember, Dissection, and so many more?

So this thread is 3 pages long and no one has nominated Kiss....... That makes me smile, I always thought Kiss was a joke band. They were a lot more candy pop than hard rock or metal.

I agree 100% but I had to represent ACDC on my list. 40 years of great albums and tours is very much what " metal" is to me.

I'm approaching this as the ten metal songs which are essential to me, not my take on what the ten most essential metal songs are in general. Even so, it's hard to narrow down to ten. Pick a certain band, have to leave another out. Pick a particular song because it fits right now, but maybe pick a different song on another day.

Anyway, here's my ten tracks right now, arranged semi-mix-tape style (so one song flows into the next).

Carcass - Heartwork

Pantera - Regular People (Conceit)

In Flames - Ordinary Story

Megadeth - Into the Lungs of Hell / Set the World Afire

Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight

Metallica - Jump In The Fire

Corrosion of Conformity - Congratulations Song

White Zombie - Starface

Slayer - Spill the Blood

GWAR - Rock and Roll Party Town

I've watched quite a bit of the multi episode metal documentary, and it seems that what you say is true.

I am no expert-far far from it.

That said, is Rammstein considered metal?

Of all the songs listed here I'd say The Zoo is my favorite, although I'd like to hear it without the talk box
