Alan Parsons, humphries. Seriously, Innovative engineers and a supremely talented band with a vision of what they wanted to do.

Not to bag on Roger Waters, he's a freaking genius that's a big part of Flyod's greatness. I do enjoy Momentary Lapse of Reason and the Division Bell, but those pail to DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and the Wall.

I love Dark Side of the Moon, Animals and Wish You Were Here.

But IMO, Division Bell is far superior to The Wall. I'd put Momentary Lapse of Reason above it as well. The Wall was just too.....meh. Not a fan of The Final Cut, either.

When Waters "took over" the band, they weren't as good. Give me Syd Barrett and David Gilmour all day over Waters.

Roger Waters lyrics are amazing. He writes like a combo between Bob Dylan and Edgar Allan Poe. Then you have Roger's wicked and unique sounding voice which adds eeriness to songs like Comfortably Numb and Hey You, just for example of two from the wall.

Next, you have David Gilmour one of the greatest singers and guitarists of all-time.

Richard Wright on keyboards was a fricking pimp. He basically created a concerto on keyboards on Shine On You Crazy Diamond parst 1-9 or whatever. He was also a fantastic singer.

And Nick Mason is probably the most underrated drummer in the history of rock n roll. To hear Nick really shine listen to the Animals album, it was Pink Floyd's answer to all the punk bands that said the Floyd couldn't rock.

I am a musician and songwriter. I am mainly a guitarist but I play the bass, drums, and keyboards too and record my albums on my own and then hire people to play shows with me. I'm writing a concept album right now dedicated and influenced by Pink Floyd because they were such a big influence on me as a musician and songwriter. Especially Darkside of the Moon, which taught me not to limit my creativity with bold ideas and the Wall, which is just such an amazing album.

Very astute observation. Roger has even said in interviews that they consciously did that in much of their music.

Also the posters saying they never overplay and that Gilmour just plays the notes that fit the song are also quite correct.

On the Turning Away is brilliant. Both the guitar in that song and the tempo change give me chills when I hear it.

Learning to Fly, On the Turning Away, Coming Back to Life, and Wearing the Inside Out (another great vocal by Richard Wright) are all outstanding songs in my opinion and have all given me chills. Especially the live versions on Pulse. I wore the cd out listening to pulse for 10 years and just bought a new version the other day.

See Echoes for more of all four guys' greatness.

This thread makes me happy. Anytime I see someone in a Floyd shirt, I'm glad to see it.

I love Animals and think it is one of Pink Floyd's best, but that is the album that Waters' took over the band.

What is it about them musically that creates such mass appeal?

The music was simultaneously simple and complex. They had layers and used space extremely effectively. Waters certainly had something to say and Gilmour's playing is beyond great. The band relied more on atmosphere than rhythm, and the lyrical content was a great compliment to the music.

Pink Floyd continues to have this strange, almost alien vibe. While stoners gravitated to it because of the spacey feel to it, that is also it's overall draw. Other things contributing this are the effects Waters chose in those long connecting passages on the albums, the use of voices as sound effects, and while none of this, individually, was particularly unique, perhaps the extensive use and combination of these various things is unique to Floyd.

Richard Wright is hardly mentioned.

And it is fair to suggest that Rick is criminally underrated. One of the most gifted musicians to ever play the keys in a rock and roll band - and he was perfect for what Floyd was doing, particularly in the post-Barrett era.

Consider that Rick was the principal songwriter on The Great Gig in the Sky - on most days, I'll call that the best song on Floyd's best album - probably my second favorite Floyd song after Wish You Were Here - and this is a pretty good endorsement by me for Wright - who both wrote that song and played the lead instrument on the recording.

Brilliant lyricist and organizer.

By far the weakest musician in the band.

I agree. He was the soul of the band.

While I can respect the band, it's a very hard listen personally. I feel like somebody gave Barney the purple dinosaur a mic and some weed and told him to sing. If I wanted to here something of similarity to DSOTM and others, then I would just listen to Dream Theater's Voices album.
