The more I listen, the more I like them. They are extremely popular for a band that is not "pop" and is actually a bit strange.

What is it about them musically that creates such mass appeal?

The overwhelming attention to detail combined with the complete subtleness that lets the notes speak for themselves and breath. They also may be the best band of all time at creating atmospheres.

While it sounds like someone describing wine, I love this explanation.

Gilmour's guitar work=possibly GOAT for me.

Their ability to create atmosphere and mood is one of the most impressive in all of music. All you need to do is listen to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" in order to conceive the full scope of their musical brilliance.

The laid back mood of most of their work. Nothing is overdone or rushed. Gilmours choice of notes and the space between the notes are beautiful. The vocals are usually spot on as well. Waters, Wright and Gilmour can all sing very well. Lastly they knew how to write songs...epic songs that take the listener on a journey. Best band ever IMO.

Top 3 for me. Some Floyd fans say I am nuts...but Division Bell was one of the greatest albums of all time.

They don't over-play.

Which creates space between notes/sounds.

Which creates atmosphere.

Which allows for dynamics.

Which makes greatness.

Besides the obvious answers such as Gilmour's talent, Richard Wright is hardly mentioned. Imo, Wright is the backbone of the band.

only the pseudo-hipster ones that think everything after Roger left is terrible

the only thing worse than them are the ones that think everything after Syd left is not as good

hell, the real hippsters don't like any Floyd after Meddle, but love Waters solo stuff

Not to bag on Roger Waters, he's a freaking genius that's a big part of Flyod's greatness. I do enjoy Momentary Lapse of Reason and the Division Bell, but those pail to DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and the Wall.

On the Turning Away is brilliant. Both the guitar in that song and the tempo change give me chills when I hear it.
