All suck

The Cure over U2 based on shear volume of quality pre-90s material. A Forest is a masterpiece. I do have great memories of early U2 live.

1. REM--Murmur and Reckoning--I wore out the vinyl on the turntable and the cassettes in my car. So. Central Rain still one of my favorites.
2. U2--as stated above in other posts, War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Under a Blood Red Sky, October, Boy were all amazing albums. They get trashed by the young'ens today because their music has been so hit or miss since then and because they're so political, but this stuff was gold.
3. Cure--unlike most of the above, I was never that into the Cure--Liked them, but never saw them live (saw REM and U2 a couple of times each) or delved too deep...sorry!

REM by a mile because of:
Chronic Town
Murmur
Reckoning
Fables of the Reconstruction
Dead letter Office.
OH
MY
God!
The Cure doesn't really hold up.
U2 was good for an album and 1/2.

Flock of Seagulls for the win. Best use of mousse award as well.

I'm kind of with you on this. This stretch run of albums sort of defines my childhood. But I can't agree with you that the cure doesn't hold up.
Oh, and, at cdawg in this thread.

Today I feel it's U2 because I just listened to October.

Im picking U2 because no one else is and fricking Joshua Tree album.

U2, like it or not, is in another layer of atmosphere. They belong in the conversation with the greatest bands ever. They've basically accomplished everything you can possibly accomplish as a band, for 37 years. I also think Joshua Tree is one of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Objectively, I would rank The Cure next, even though I prefer R.E.M.'s sound. Those two are really close for me.
ETA: I realize you said pre-90's, and I would still give it to U2 on Joshua Tree alone.

Not crazy about any of the three, but REM.

Their 90's work is as good as it gets, so I asssume you speak of the 00's.

Upvote. And what's awesome is you didn't even include Life's Rich Pageant.
I generally use U2 love as an indicator. If someone likes anything other than Gloria and those early hits, they like really bland, boring music. Joshua Tree? Might as well listen to Maroon 5 or 21 Pilots.

or Blink 182.
Thought I'd include another number band.

Blasphemy!
I don't know your age, but for it's time this music was fairly novel. The production by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois was groundbreaking. I think with the younger generation U2 is just an old pop band. I do agree that the harder driving rock of earlier U2 was a different animal, but one thing about the band is that they did change and evolve.
Any similarities of Joshua Tree to that later pop drivel you mentioned is only because what was new and exciting in the 80's has been dulled and copied over time.
