Pearl Jam "Lightning Bolt" appreciation thread

Personally, I enjoy the Into the Wild soundtrack better than any Pearl Jam

i get that a lot of people hate pearl jam! hey man, no big deal, i won't shove it down your throat like some people here do with drake.

i mean at least we can agree they're better than drake, right? c'mon.

I like the new album so far. They obviously weren't created to be classic rock but as of now there's really no one else to carry the torch so I'm cool with it too. More of an arena rock band but I get what you mean.

At what point did Led Zeppelin make the transition from a rock to classic rock?

Led Zeppelin weren't created as a classic rock band, either. Zeppelin's got some great albums and tunes, but in today's landscape just like in decades before it, what's considered classic is what came 20-30 years before.
Zeppelin was probably one of the first grunge bands. They were hated when they first came out. I know it's hard to imagine. Because of classic rock radio and a genius business plan, they're considered a great rock band.
The reason Led Zeppelin is loved is because of dads trying to convince kids that hair metal wasn't cool, but Zeppelin was "real rock." More and more, whether you like it or not, classic rock radio will start playing what you grew up with rather than The Eagles, Zepp, The Doors, etc. And those bands will go on to the golden oldies rock stations with 50-60-year-ols talking about "real rock."
History repeats itself. Pearl Jam has become a part of that history.

I guess it depends on your definition of classic rock. If PJ is to be considered classic rock, then are all of the 80's and 90's rock bands to now be considered classic rock?

probably just as depeche mode is considered it.

i mean classic rock nowadays has a long line of bad '80s bands. i'm not trying to define what is and isn't classic. but that's what the stations are playing.

radio really isn't important though. the other factor into these bands being classic is remerging as older dudes who once had a hit or several and coming back strong. pearl jam has consistently stayed good to great for more than 20 years. it's more in how you define the word classic. there are moments on lightning bolt where pearl jam is clearly positioning themselves in the ranks of what is considered classic. it's odd sometimes, but most of the time it works.

Ya I guess I just have a hard time calling a rock band from the late 80s/early 90's like Metallica classic rock lol

I'm in the same boat but it just means we're getting old.

grunge was just an adjective used by people who didn't like what was coming out of seattle. but, record companies manufactured what they thought grunge was with a number of angry bands, which continued until the rise of nu-metal, which might be one of the worst periods of music in general.
