Yep, that peaked at #20 in the US. He charted in the top 10 consistently in England, however.

He was what was known as an Album artist back then, with 3 studio albums (5, 3,& 1), 2 Live albums(5 &1), and 1 compilation album(6) landing in the top 10 and 1 live album at #16. That is 7 of 7 US albums released that broke the top 20, 6 of those top 10, and 5 of those top 5.

They had one other song off that album that got a bunch of airplay.. ("Out of My Head" reached #3 on the Adult Top 40 and made the Top 20 of the Billboard when those charts were mostly r&b or very pop songs) - never played on MTV like "The Way" but I remember hearing it a lot on the radio - definitely not a One Hit Wonder especially compared to like "Breakfast at Tiffanys" or "Sex and Candy"
Jars of Clay were pretty big on the Christian rock circuit for a while, I think even played smaller arenas at one point (don't quote me on that, I'm not familiar with Christian rock, although the OC Supertones were catchy ska punk) - a lot of their music just didn't crossover like Flood - was kind of a fluke if you really think about it

Good album, but that single was just too big if that's possible (I think it broke the record for most weeks at $1 at the time or something like that) and played so much - that it was almost a curse because the odds they were ever going to have another song that big was like slim to none.. it's the alt rock version of Ice Ice Baby (even though Vanilla Ice did do a numetal remake of Ice Ice Baby)

They had the misfortune of trying to breakout at the same time U2 was in about 83-84. Adamson and his other guitarist really worked well together as co-leads creating that " bagpipe" sound.....and that did them in. The Crossing was solid as was the next album.
Also I would group The Alarm in with them although they did not have anywhere as big of a breakthrough like "in a Big Country" but Strength is a solid album that still holds up today overall.

Totally agree. Love that album … got it when it first came out and still revisit it from time to time. Unlike Big Country and U2 I don’t think that the Alarm had as good of an overall body of work. Although I also had an EP called the Stand that I really liked too. I’m pretty sure that the singer for the Alarm sang for Big Country in the 2000s
Drum and bass for original Big Country line up was great too
