My God, awesome voices, very depressing! 2 of the best country singing voices ever, IMO.

Keith Whitley - Don't close your eyes

“All my neon neighbors they like what I play”
“‘Cause they've heard it every night since you've walked away”

Easily a top 5 country song for me, and I would not even consider myself a Verne fan.
Same for Got No Reason Now For Going Home and Gene Watson.

Chiseled in Stone is 100% stone cold country. I love that song.

I still remember my grandmaw telling me when I was a teenager don’t be drinking too much look at Keith Whitley, he drank himself to death. I never really believed her but turns out when he died his BAC was like 3 times the legal limit. I heard he drank 2 fifths of whiskey one morning.

The two songs don't even compare in terms of sadness... Chiseled in Stone on a whole different level in that regard.

SavingCountryMusic.com has started a country music history podcast and covered his story a couple of weeks ago. From that podcast...
quote:
The singer’s blood alcohol level was reported to be .47, or almost five times the amount to be declared intoxicated in Tennessee. Police had found 23 empty cans of Budweiser at his house, an empty bottle of Scope, and four half consumed bottles of hair spray.

All time favorite song is I'm Over you and right now I have Keith Whitley radio on pandora playing in my classroom for the students. They complain abotu it at first but by about Christmas they are tapping their feet and nodding their heads. Even caught some of them with the songs that play through that station downloaded to their phones.

Yep I heard he was drinking the hairspray. The chilling "Tell Lorrie I love her" song was his goodbye song to her.

Just heard this today on sirius--hadn't heard it in a long, long time and I was thinking about how wonderful Vern Gosdin was. But Keith was too!

Keith by far.

I saw Verne play at the Natchez city auditorium around 15 years ago. He was so fricked up he stopped singing midway through his first song and got escorted off the stage.
