Hell, a northern textile worker in 1855 was more dependent on slavery, than a poor southern dirt farmer working his own 40 with his sons and no slaves.
Not to say there was no racism in the rest of the country. But Young's song was referencing contemporary southern racism of the 1950s and 60s after the rest of the US had gotten rid of racist laws and segregation. A lot of ugly stuff went down in the south at that time in defense of white supremacy.

But, let's keep up this pretense that Southern white folks (rather than the love of money as the Bible tells us) are the root of all evil.
As someone else pointed out, when Young put out that song, it had only been 8 years since white college students (presumably the most educated/affluent segment of the population) in Oxford had literally fought the National Guard in the streets to prevent a black veteran (and taxpayer) from enrolling in the state university.
I understand that Southies in Boston fought vehemently against integrated busing, but that does not change the sheer magnitude of the hatred/evil that permeated the south.

Grew up in the South, didn't know anyone who had an issue with the song.

Except for Ronnie van Zandt.

Don't know if true but a buddy of mine told me Young wouldn't even play in the south after releasing this song for several years because he was scared.

No problem, artist aren't known for their intellect.

By an amazing if not terribly interesting coincidence, I just happened to stumble over this:
Neil Young - "Are You Ready For The Country", as filmed in the barn
Can anyone ID the other musicians?

I'm not a big Neil Young fan but I really like this song. You really can't argue with the message of the song. Especially considering the context of the times in which it was written and recorded.

great song. could care less about his "message"

Neil did what poets have done for thousands of years: he observed and captured what he saw.
Bitch about the song all you want, but he was right. And that guitar/piano combo?? Southern Man jams, bros.
brb, going to listen to it right now.
LONG LIVE NEIL

Aw, bullshite. I went to high school in Phillie for a couple of years and they were much more racist than my sleepy hometown in south Georgia. Much more. There were like 4 black kids in the high school. That would compare to a 60/40 white black split in south Georgia achieved through heavy duty busing. And there were and are plenty, plenty of black folk in Phillie - they just didn't want them in the white schools and they were successful in that endeavor.
Oh, and by the way if you are from the south, they think you are a poorly educated, racist redneck that spends his time drinking moonshine and screwing his cousin or sister whichever on is more readily available.

Neil became friends and collaborated with Skynyrd later on. No problem with his opinions.

Canadians are now Yankees?
So the South wasn't just fighting the North, they were fighting North America?

I don't think that was the point of the rebuke.
The point of the rebuke was Skynyrd didn't think Young had actually ever been to Alabama and met the people from Alabama. They had been to Muscle Shoals to record their album and sat beside Aretha Franklin and many other black artists and actually saw them treated with respect and dignity by white people. This was a contrast to the message of Southern Man, and the images of Alabama being displayed on the evening news. It was more of a challenge to Young to come down and experience the Alabama they experienced.
