Would you believe his main instrument is Flugelhorn (trumpet)?

Is a flugelhorn a variation of the trumpet? I was actually talking to someone at work about this the other day.

Edit: What I meant was, is it a sort of cross between french horn and trumpet?

you can laugh at the 1980s infommercials but half the soundtrack to 'once upon a time in america' is zamfir and its pretty damn awesome.

It is more in the trumpet and cornet family than the single or double (French) horn from a style and playing technique standpoint.

Soundwise, for lack of a better term - if we consider trumpet at the "bright" end of the scale for these, trumpet -> cornet -> Flugelhorn -> -> horn (single/double/"French")

Great all round musician and perhaps the best musician in Zeppelin but no, not the best bassist. When I think bassist, I think Victor Wooten.

Meh. Flashy doesn't always equal "GOAT" on an instrument. There are lots of creative, innovative bass players - Pastorious, Claypool, Cliff Burton, Flea - all as much "lead" bass players, than the traditional role of the instrument.

But, guys like JPJ and Geddy Lee had to team up with otherworldly drummers and hold their own, album after album and show after show. Lee is a true prodigy on the instrument, too, I'll agree.

But, other than JPJ, the next guy I think of is Ox - because not only did he have to play the bass for The Who - during their productive period, he had to keep all the time that their drummer (however great and innovative he was, technically sound or crisp timekeeper he wasn't) didn't keep.

When you consider all the great multi-instrumentalists - McCartney, Winwood, Prince, Hendrix, Lee - only JPJ leaps to the top of my list as GOAT (and maybe Lee) on bass - Maca is probably underrated as a bass player, but hardly a GOAT candidate.

JPJ is. The fact he could play bass pedals for live shows while handling other instrument responsibilities doesn't impress you jaded bastards?

Ten Years Gone - Great Plant lyrics, Page with the b-bender, Bonham solid as ever - and JPJ PLAYING 2 PARTS AT THE SAME TIME

I would maybe throw Buddy Rich as well, and I could cosign your list.
